Starter amp for the Sansui curious...

As others have said, the AU-717 would be a great all-around starting point for the classic Sansui sound, and possibly an ending point as well as it's a model held in high regard when property serviced. It's a model which plays well with variety of speaker brands, ie. has enough warmth to tame brighter ones like Klipsch, and provides ample bass to JBLs. Personally, I'm with Bluesky on the assessment of the AU-X701/901 early Alpha series (have two 701s), but they aren't for everyone, while the 517/717 seems to make many listeners happy, and I still have one of those also.

Indeed, that 1970/71 series of seperates were very good looking gear, for what that's worth. I've now put a whole system together around that series, and it is quite striking. Sounds great as well.
