Stay away from Music Hall USB 1 turntable.

People here go on and on with anti-Rega comments incessantly, even when the topic had nothing to do with Rega. I'm simply trying to offer some balance.
I see people post very positive statements about Regas on this board (specific models, at least). So I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish with your "balance."

I agree wholeheartedly that people who haven't heard something shouldn't slam it. But then (you may recall the thread), you said you don't necessarily trust the judgement of people who have heard a piece of gear.

That's kind of a logical dead-end there in terms of sharing opinions on audio gear.

It's true I don't necessarily trust others' ears. But I give them a chance. It's just that I often eventually find reasons their preferences simply don't match mine. So no...I don't think it's a logical dead-end...just a debate that no one wants to give up on.

As for the positive comments about Rega...I'm aware of those. That's really not the point. I'm not trying to balance an entire forum. It's just that when someone jumps in and tells a new member all Rega is junk I think it's useful to point out that there are differing opinions on such things.

Guys, if you want to have a civilized discussion about Regas please start a new thread. This one's way off topic now.

"I'd think USB turntables are redundant"

well not everyone is willing to change to different electronics and you can go directly into a computer from the usb tables. they are for the convenience, not for the quality.

at least the MH provides a real cartridge and not a ceramic that might damage your records.

My feelings exactly. I'm a bit surprised that the OP was expecting hi end response from a table targeted to the masses to rip .mp3s of Grandpa's old Led Zeppelin LPs.

And if there was so much concern about the specs, why weren't those researched BEFORE the purchase was made.

As to the return, that's tricky. He's being a jerk about the box, but what is he supposed to do with it? Anybody here want to pay him or the dealer full price for a turntable somebody else just didn't like?? I doubt it.

From what I see, I can't be sure that the Music Hall brand is targeted at the masses. The one store that sells them in my area is a high-end audio retailer.

Whereas there are at least a dozen stores where I can walk in and buy a Crosley or similar toy record player with USB (and a built in speaker!!)

I don't recall what kind of turntable you have. What was it again that you bought to replace your Rega? :D
Touche!!! :)

...but my frequent and sometimes impassioned reports are proportionate to the quality difference per-dollar between the two 'tables on the used market. I'll be happy to tell you more about that since you asked...... :D

Moderator note:

This is a thread about how disappointed a buyer is with a very specific version of a Music Hall table - the USB. This is NOT the place for another round of vintage vs. everything new or Rega bashing - if you really feel the need to start all that up again, then please start another thread.

Thanks.

True dat, but it is a USB turntable and it's obvious that sacrifices were made to accommodate that functionality. To expect middling, or even entry level audiophile quality from such a beast seems a leap to me. I've got an old Dual 1225 out in the garage with 0.15 wow and flutter; 0.25 seems ludicrous for a "real" turntable, but that's what Hall finds acceptable for his target market. I can't even find any specs for this on the Ions...

It looks to me like this is something straddling the line as it's far better than the Frisbee plattered Ion toys I've seen, but not up to snuff as a turntable that most here would prefer. To buy one expecting better sound than the JVC mentioned was not a wise choice.

FWIW my previous bashing of the Crosley was not an assumption. I had one of the suitcase models. Don't ask.

Hopefully I can bring some closure to this thread. I am going to be picking up a JVC QL5 this week, and I have a feeling I will be very happy with this turntable. I would like to thank Pio1980 and skriefal for all of their help. It has been a great experience.

I have been doing some thinking the last couple of days. Someone mentioned records and stylus cleaning. If any one is interested I am thinking of starting a thread and talking about how to maintain styli and vinyl from a perspective of a person who is blind. I was reading a while ago, that someone felt he might have to switch from a manual turntable to an automatic because he was losing his vision. I would like to just present some alternitives before switching to an automatic turntable.

I get asked all of the time how I do things like this as a person who is blind, and I would like to share some insite. I mainly want to talk about this to help others keep enjoying their vinyl if they are having problems with their vision. If any one is interested in this discussion, let me know.

I'm open to any questions and no one is going to offend me by asking me how I do things. Believe me, I've been asked just about any question you can think of. I just want to be able to help others.

I am familiar with voice recognition software and have played with it some, but I prefer typing on a normal computer keyboard because I have found that I have to keep repeating myself with the voice recognition and it gets to be a little annoying. I use screen reader software, which outputs things I type and that other people type to an audio speech synthesizer.

Interesting. Perhaps the speech recognition system that Apple is developing (Siri) will be better.

As for stylus cleaning, maybe a brush could be positioned on the plinth on rails so that, when the tonearm is cued down it makes contact with the brush, which could then be moved slightly back & forth.

A fantastic table. I had owned one before. A real treat.

Those guys are the cream of AK's crop.

. . .

I think you will be pleased with the JVC QL5. I have a similar model, JVC QL50 and it is rock solid turntable.

Look forward to your post in the future.

I like the stylus cleaning idea. You should patent that, I'd buy it. When I clean the stylus I lift the magic eraser to the tonearm and dip the stylus 2 or 3 times being careful not to move the stylus. I've had sighted people inspect this and they always tell me it is clean.

Just wanted to give you an update. I picked up the JVC QL5 a couple of days ago. Let me just say it is an amazing table. I was spinning an origional 1967 pressing of The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour, and the sound stage was incredible. I thought my Technics was good, but the sound of the JVC blew me away. It was as if the system was begging to be cranked up and I obliged.

I am very happy with this turntable. I just want to thank all of you for your suggestions and advice. I wish I would have joined this forum long ago. I have learned a lot from all of you and hopefully some day I will be able to help someone who needs advice regarding audio.

Bill... I just came across this thread, started reading, and then recognized your username. I'm glad that the QL-5 is working well for you!

You have a nice selection of turntables. I am happy I was able to get this one. I think it will last me a long time.

Thank you for your help.

You owe any AK member who owns a Crosley turntable an apology.

I own one (suitcase model). It's crap. But it's fun crap, and I bought it ($40) for the grandkids to play their records on. I let them pick out LPs at HPB in the $1 bin.

Too bad about the Music Hall-1 USB. Worse about the customer service on a defective piece. Duly noted for future reference.
