Steady speed with platter on, not without

I have two Pioneer TTs, a 510a and a 518 that have the same "problem". I quote that becuase I'm not so sure it is a problem. When the platter's are on the strobe shows both of them hold speed perfectly! but if I take the platter off but turn it on, the spindle does not move smoothly, more like spurts. Assuming this is a problem, what could it be...more optimistically, is there something about the weight of the platter that makes it work right?

On some direct drive motor, it is not advisable to run the motor without the platter on.

Don't recall the name of/motor type at the moment. :scratch2:

It's not a problem. The platter must be on for them to function properly.

Platter is a heavy flywheel. Motor is tuned to turn it. If it were tuned to turn properly without the platter, it would struggle with it in place.

Some tt's have a sensor on the platter (or is platter dependent) that provides feedback to keep the speed stable. Don't worry about it. The records you aren't playing with the platter off will never know the difference.

What they all said. Its a combination of sensors and flywheel effect. As long as it runs stable with the platter on, I wouldn't worry about it.

On some turntables this is a symptom of one of the drive coils or transistors being open. On others it is a symptom of the platter bearing needing to be cleaned and oiled. On others it's normal, If the strobe is dead steady with the platter in place, it's normal.
