Stumped by Rens

This is why guys like me need to hold onto parts, I'm almost 100% sure I gave away some of what you need not long ago. Your Bass circuit, the original purple caps have been completely replaced, and maybe one inductor. I can't imagine they were that bad but who knows. On the top end it's hard to see but if they were replaced, maybe driven to hard you'd see some damage on the emits and emims.

I'd like to see some close up photos if you pull them, just to see what they used.

Nice okeeteekid, nailing that early in the thread.

While the actual crossover values might vary between the 90's and the crossover schematics, the driver polarity and wiring layout should be correct per the schematic. I'd match the wiring to that. Hopefully, with a multimeter, with a continuity function. That would make trouble-shooting the wiring easier. Like the others have stated, I'd be willing to bet that's where the issues originate.

If it helps you down the road I don't think I've ever looked inside my 90's, so they should be completely original inside and if I can take pictures of anything that might help you let me know.

I'll likely be taking them apart more this weekend. Thanks for the offer 7.62, I'll keep it in mind and let you know but I should be good to go with Infinity schematic.

I do have 1 question though, I tried briefly the other day to get the EMIM/EMIT off and the darn things are stuck fast to the cabinet of the speaker. I'm hesitant to just pry but not sure what else to do than remove the 4 larger screws around the driver and pull. Any thoughts?

The emim is held to the cabinet by 4 screws. They are second from the top and bottom far left and right I believe. They are larger than the other ones. Be sure to put those other screws back before removing these 4.

I thought about them being stuck to the baffle and about all I could come up with is maybe some light taps on the back of a very fine chisel coming up on the bottom of the driver where it meets the baffle.

Welp, just as I got the Rens situated to really start working on them, my dad popped out of nowhere saying he found another pair of Sigmas and just wants to buy those and get rid of the Rens. One trip to LA later and 3 stories of misery (with no prior warning from the seller) and I'm not really sure what to do with these now since it would be a pretty big timesink to rebuild the crossovers and everything. I think we're just going to list them for what we paid and be done with them if we can. Oh well.

Thanks for all of the help guys, I'm sure it would have been an interesting project.

Well Congrats to your Dad finding a second set of Sigmas. Dear God, three stories I bet that was fun .

Sigmas!

:drool....

excepting bucking them down three flights of stairs.... ewww! was there an elevator?
are you going to sell the rens?

Unfortunately no there was no elevator. It was an apartment building with outdoor split stair cases so 6 staircases total and a landing that you have to do a 180 on at the bottom of each. We used a hand-cart and ruined ourselves getting them down but did so with no damage to the speakers luckily.

Yeah I think the Rens got to go, they need a lot of work and plus we need to lessen the load on our wallets that the Sigmas made.

That's exactly what i visioned when you said that, going up not to bad, going down holy hell I'd be ruined for a month !

Atta' boy, better the speakers look good then you feeling good...Seriously congrats on the find and sorry the Rens didn't work out they are nice speakers when functioning properly. Some might think this sacrilege but perhaps parting out would you net you a handsome profit? Just a thought.

I don't recall there being a fuse anywhere inside of the Ren 90s and actually now that I think of it, I don't remember ever seeing a fuse in any of the Infinitys that I've worked on, which is a fair few at this point.

Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place but it doesn't ring a bell.

I couldn't see one either but the wiring diagram shows a fuse. Or maybe it's something else. Im metering open load at the connections.

the wiring diagram shows a fuse

The "fuse" on the Tech Sheet is a resetable fuse/Polyswitch that protects the emit only. Have you switched the left and right speaker wires to confirm it is the speaker and not the amp?

Hey thanks for the reply. It started with the left channel going silent. Figured amp cuz it's been in the shop twice in 18 months. Turned out the amp left channel went and the left speaker. Did the usual trouble shooting. The amp is in the shop now. The speaker is open load. That's an open circuit.

The speaker is open load. That's an open circuit.

When trying to measure DC resistance, yes. The caps in the crossover are blocking DC. You will need to remove each driver individually and test across the leads in order to determine if the drivers are good.

Can confirm @seifreit, on my pair of 90, I get all kinds of wonky readings at first then OL on my greenlee multi-meter. on a infinity 3" midrange that I've got laying around it reads 3.9 ohms which is about right.

However, you say an amp did this? you likely burned something out in the crossover if you're lucky. Information like that is kinda important. Please don't neglect to mention it next time.

start pulling drivers (gently) and testing them individually. the 'fuse' is inside the crossover network.
