That high voltage buzz
Took advantage of a 'no'-it-all salesman....
I worked in a stereo shop in the 70s with our competitor's store just down the street. As a result, we got lots of people who would run back and forth playing one of us off the other. It was easy to figure this out as one of the salesmen down there used a phrase, "You can weld with this amp", and we would get curious questions as to whether amps were, in fact, used for this purpose.
This competitor would take sales from us any way he could by saying that their amps were better because they were 'disco ready' - yes, they claimed they were used in the local bars, which was not true since I'd actually installed most of them myself.
So, to turn the tables on these guys, we rigged up a demo using a Crown power amp where we had a 60hz signal generator driving the Crown DC-300 in bridged mode and then hooked up an electric drill to the speaker terminals. We then placed 2x4s in the demo room and allowed potential customers to drill holes in them. Wasn't welding but it called their bluff and our sales went up because there wasn't the first technical person on staff at our competitor.
