Stylus / cartridge for yamaha p350

Hello,

While listening to a record last night on my yamaha p 350, the sound suddenly became extremely fuzzy, like when dust gets stuck in the needle. But then I examined the stylus and it was all worn out. I didn’t notice any problems with it before though, so I wonder what happened…

In any case, I think I need to replace it.

Do you know what model of stylus this is?

And, should I replace the cartridge or just the stylus? Honestly, replacing the cartridge scares me a bit…

Just replace the stylus if you are satisfied with the sound quality. AT carts usually have the model number on top of the cart for some strange reason. :dunno: Unless someone else recognizes that model, you may have to remove the cart (or at least loosen the screws) to find the model number. Remove the stylus before loosening or replacing the cart.

Hey thanks! Sound is good so I think I'll just replace the stylus then. I'm a bit daunted about removing the cartridge. It looks like an atn-3400 but not 100% sure...

If so, Amazon has an EVG (generic) stylus for $10.95 as opposed to $25 plus shipping for genuine AT styli elsewhere.
 
Personally, I wouldn't buy a generic stylus when I could get the genuine product, as generic styli are very hit and miss. The AT3400 has a conical stylus, but it has the same body as the AT95E which has an elliptical stylus. So you could take the opportunity to upgrade to an elliptical stylus by purchasing the ATN95E or even the special version, the ATN95EX. Bear in mind that the elliptical versions require a lower tracking force of about 2g (and corresponding anti-skating).

As far as generic styli are concerned, those from Jico and Tonar have the best reputations - I think both are made in Japan. I've seen some bad reports on Swiss-made styli, such as Pfanstiehl - it seems they are a bit hit and miss. William Thakker now offer two brands - GSM (Swiss) and Thakker Japan. The latter are undoubtedly made by Jico but are more expensive, probably to reflect the quality. Apparently, EVG source their styli from various manufacturers, including Jico - so, the ones branded EVG Japan may be a good gamble. However, as I said earlier, I would always go to the original manufacturer when the product is still available - I would invest in the ATN95E stylus, at least.

EVG used to source from JICO until about 2 years ago when JICO cut them off. EVG now sources from the Swiss manufacturer which is most likely HUCO. I have had zero problems or complaints about Swiss styli in the past few years. Tonar sells JICO sourced for many models. Some Tonars are Swiss made. No one manufacturer makes all models so retailers buy from multiple sources.
