Subwoofer and Vintage Pioneer equipment

First off let me say that much of this stuff gets me confused so I may be asking things that may not make any sense.

I have a Pioneer Spec 1 preamp ne. head unit and two Spec 4 amps, a pair of DBX Soundfield V speakers and a pair of Pioneer tower speakers. My first thought was to split the output from the Spec 1 with one Spec 4 being the front channel and the second Spec 4 as the rear channel.

So far not all that complicated but then I started thinking about hooking up the TV and Computer to the system I thought about adding a Sub and center and surround, now it's complicated.

How do I split the outputs from the Spec 1 to at least add a Sub? With the Soundfield V speakers do I really need a sub? I can say that after I re-foamed the bass and mids they sound pretty awesome on their own.

One solution might be to purchase a dedicated HT preamp to replace your current preamp. This will give you the required outputs and signal decoding for front, center, rear and subwoofer channels. You would need an additional amplifier to power the center and use a powered subwoofer.

The problem is, there's dozen or more ways to do most of this stuff.

To wmgwizard's point, if you want actual surround sound rather than just sound from more speakers, you need a surround pre/pro. As I see it, that's the biggest question. Do you want "real" surround sound?

Adding a sub in and of itself is easy. Just get one that has low level and speaker level inputs. That combo facilitates connection to pretty much any system.
