Suddenly no sound output

I have a 1000x that my dad bought new 40ish years ago. It sat unused for quite a while and about a year ago I took it from him to use powering my outdoor speakers. I noticed that I was losing volume and the sound quality was changing so I did some reading here and found out about Deoxit. That seemed to fix the problem, at least for a little while.

Sunday we had music on for 4-5 hours and all was good, until my kids started playing with the volume and changing songs on the iPhone we were using. After turning it off to put them to bed it is no longer giving any sound output. I haven't had a chance to measure the speaker output, if there is any to determine if there is even current flowing to the speakers but given that the behavior is identical regardless of input, tuner, etc I would guess there is not.

I'm pretty new to working on this type of equipment and don't even know where to start. The fuses on the back panel are all good but I haven't had a chance to open the case and look at the inside for any obvious issues. I'm not against replacing this unit if I have to, but for the nostalgia value and the sound quality if I can fix it for less than buying a new one I would definitely like to do so....not to mention the learning opportunity and challenge of doing so.

I'm probably missing pertinent information here, sorry I'm at the point where I don't know what it is that I don't know. Thanks in advance for your help!

It probably needed recapping! Now maybe more, but it is well worth it. If you diy it should be affordable. Googling this unit can help greatly for info!

Anyway it's well worth fixing for it's sonics as low power units can have great sonics, probably because of the simpler circuits with less to congest the signal through it! Many love this unit, sonically so save it!

As a bonus it looks easy to work on also. So good for a first unit repair!

I'd personally try to see whats wrong first before doing a wholesale recap.

Check you "pre out main in" jumpers on the back of the unit. If you have a multimeter - connect it to the speaker terminals with the speakers switched on, tell us what reading you get, it shoud be something in mV. Check the position of all your switches and ensuring that the preamp is connected to the poweramp (as per the jumper point I make earlier). Double-check the "monitor" switch.

As another check, get a sound source, turn its volume way down, and connect directly to the "main in" jumpers, do you get any sound?

When you say that the sound quality was changing and you were losing volume - was this in both channels? were you getting distortion also? Are you getting any sound when radio is selected?

It looks like there is some kind of protect circuit on the output of this receiver, that doesn't use a relay. People with more experience with this receiver may have some ideas - but I would look at this first after doing and taking some basic checks/measurements.
 
Shadowdog, I'm not sure my soldering skills are good enough to recap the whole thing but I suppose if it's not working I have nothing to lose.

Slimecity, I'd get a lot of crackling whenever I changed the volume and sometimes the output would just get really quiet. I tried using a different input (ie: aux then phono then tape 1,etc) and I'd get sound out of some but not others. Deoxit seemed to fix all that. After putting the case back on though I did notice that the right side outputs stopped working. I assumed it was probably the jumpers so I cleaned them as well but no luck. Now I'm getting no output from any source, including the radio tuner.

I'd guess it is something like capacitors, the thing is 40 years old. I haven't had a chance to get out my multi-meter but need to do that. I'm hoping maybe when I open the case up there will be an obviously bad capacitor, I know I've seen them discolor, swell, etc in other devices before.
 
I do believe , with SS one bad cap or part can cause a chain reaction in ruining transistors etc. So you may have to test transistors and maybe diodes also. Resistors can be fuses in some amps. I have some dead SS amps and receivers and have to buy or build a cap tester. I don't think you really need a transistor tester, ( just use a DIMM) , but perhaps someone will correct me on that.

Check your TAPE MONITOR switch position. As well as your SPEAKER SELECT switch position.
 
Do any of the lamps light up ? Is the MUTE switch in the unmuted (OFF) position ?
