Suggest "Larger" Bookshelf Speakers...

There isn't one speaker mentioned hear that can reach below 30 hz. If you want a true full range bookshelf speaker. Look for a pair of upgraded Mcintosh ML-1c using Roger Russells newer upgraded crossovers and up graded tweeter and super tweeter. Give Steve a call at Audio Classics. you'll need a good clean 100 to 150 watt amp. 2105, 2125, 7150, 7100 etc. If you like tubes, two MC275's, a MC 2102, etc.

I should note that the aforementioned speakers are all sealed designs so integrating a sub shouldn't be that difficult.

ok everybody, I won a pair of Dynaco A35s and they will be here in the next week. They were among the first ones recommended on this thread and kept getting placed at the head of the list (along with KLH, a pair of which I will try to pick up in due course).

I will report back when I get them plugged up. But feel free to continue the conversation if you have anything to add...

If not already mentioned...PSB 500. Good bass for a bookshelf with smooth highs. They can probably be had for $200 or less on eBay.

Pretty much all my experience has told me recently that every smaller bookshelf speaker advertises itself with "what a huge sound! close your eyes and you'd never know the difference!" This marketing will go only so far. The missing verbiage is "For such a small speaker". I need a big speaker.

The A35s, I hope, will deliver as promised. There is just something about surface area on the woofer -- 6 inches and 10 inches are a big difference!

When I was asking for great "Tiny" bookshelf speakers a month or so ago, someone recommended La Scalas -- and in jest -- but now I know what they mean! Live and learn.

Thanks - have heard Focal - good sound, but did not make a very big impression on me - which means i should hear them again!

I'm actually looking for Bigger (i.e.: BIGGER) than this right now. I'm trying to get something more in between bookshelf and floor... should have made that clearer in the OP

How about one of the larger EPI's or maybe the Genesis 2? Oops, I just saw you bought something already.

The A-35 is a nice loudspeaker -- the classic (Scandinavian) Dynacos are a little mellow but:

1) they're fairly sensitive (they'll work well with fairly low powered hardware).
2) they do nothing wrong; they'll call no attention to themselves.
3) they're very pleasant to listen to, top to bottom.

^^^^what he said:)

I love A25s/35s and the next set I come across I will keep. They remind me a bit of Altec Valencias in that they don't really do the frequency extremes but really get the middle bit right. Very easy to listen to for hours (like the KLH 5 and L710).

That sounds enticing - I'm eager to give mine a try. I think those qualities are what I'm looking for. Were some not made in DK? I thought they were all "Scandinavian". The one in your picture looks later -- 1980s I'd guess?

If you really like the Advent you could try the Advent/1 it has the same treble as the Advent (well the fried egg of the NLA) and the same 10 inch woofer but in a smaller cabinet (about the size of a KLH 6). You will be still be using your sub of course.

The JBL 4406 is not large but excellent. A pair of Event 20/20 Studio monitors passive have a great high end and a foward port. I would also suggest the Klipsch RB-5s but it has a rear port but it is an excellent bookshelf. I have all of these speakers currently.

Well - I have A35s and I have Valencias... and I can't really quite disagree

My A35 pair (which might actually be A-40XLs or I dunno what!) are, I'm sure, fairly old -- no idea how old, though; I picked them up on the "take it or leave it" swap pile at our town dump when we lived in MA quite a few years ago.

By the 1980s (I think by then at any rate!) Dynaco was owned by a company called Panor and some of their speaker model numbers were recycled onto rather different speakers than the classic Hafler-era (and not long afterwards) Dynaco speakers.

There's still unfortunately one canonical site for Dynaco info -- and it's no longer maintained... but it's still useful.

Used:
KEF 103.2 monitors (great for smaller rooms, accurate)
Mirage 460 (deep bass, larger than the typical bookshelf speaker)

New:
PSB Image B6
Paradigm Mini Monitor

OK so who thinks my DYNACO A-35s (which I already bought but are in the mail!) are going to be too big in the room I'm listening in?

It is 20x15 with 8ft ceilings - the listener's right wall is open to the dining room.

I like the sound of the room generally, for audio playback or acoustic instruments, and feel it is sound-efficient and not too boomy, despite hardwood floors (maybe the carpets help).

PS Here is how my Advents are sitting -- on a console about 2.5 feet off the ground. I'm trying to get them out from the wall, but when they turn inward toward me, the corner is close to the wall. Do you think this will work for the sealed design when I get the DYNAcOS?

not sure what you mean by "too big" -- I'd worry more about filling the space effectively - that is a fair sized room. The A35s definitely won't be "too big" in any sense of the word; indeed you might have the opposite problem.

In fact, you just might benefit from something more along the lines of what I'm usin' upstairs, methinks... 'specially if you're looking for (as they say) 2die4 midrange (as I do)...

Sorry for the ultra-wide-angle lens distortion; this space is 26 x 26, only a bit larger than yours...
