Suggestions on Yamaha YP-D4

hi everyone, I'm looking for suggestions on the above turntable I just purchased (my fist turntable so need some help). Currently it's missing the tonearm counter weight and it's also missing the headshel and cartridge. Can any of you offer any suitable replacements for all three. I've searched eBay and I did find a tonearm/weight assembly but it's for a YP-D3 not sure if it would fit since there is no maintenance manual for the later to compare to the YP-D4. First of all, go to VinylEngine web site and register. It's free. Then download the owners and service manuals for yours or others that are similar. Start looking at the images of the Yamaha tone arms and their counter weights. You should be able to form a "grouping" of what looks the same or similar. Be on the look-out for one of those.

Measure the shaft where the counterweight goes. If it 10mm, a few others weights might fit... Or you can glue up a series of fender washers to make the appropriate mass and cut a small rubber band to lay along the counterweight stub to slip the washers over. The rubber will bite in and hold the washers in place.

For the headshell, it takes a standard 1/2" mount headshell. Until the whole TT is sorted out, just get an inexpensive generic one off eBay for now. I'd suggest an AT95e cartridge as goods inexpensive starting point. Follow the owners manual and the instructions with the cartridge for mounting.

Get an inexpensive digital scale to allow you to measure the tracking force as you move your washers or non-Yamaha counterweight to get the desired force you want - usually about 1.75 grams.

Thanks for the info, I've found a headshell on amazon and cartridge that you recommended. I'll be giving these a try, just looking into the counter weight now.

One thing to note is that the YP-D4 and the YP-B2 are essentially the same table, ie. one is direct drive and the other is belt drive. Therefore just keep doing searches on the B2 and you may come up with spare parts for your D4 tonearm sooner than later. It's a nice little table (I have one) and definitely worth the trouble. I have an Ortofon 2M Bronze cart and SH-4 headshell currently mounted on mine and it sounds good. Adding new feet will clean up the sound too:

Boy, you aren't kidding. That looks just like my YP-B2, just more bells and whistles! Marcus, did you ever find your counterweight?

nice table! really like the feet, can you point me where you got them? thanks
