Surface Noise Sucks

Joshua Tree yep that was the lp. OMG it was horrible! Soo the 200 is better? COOL!! I will have to check it out. I know the CD of the remaster is fantastic. I even tried to get my $ back from the 180. Total waste.

Whoop! No, sorry - I don't know specifically about the 200g Joshua tree. I meant 200g Quiex in general is pretty consistent.

I believe I have my tonarm set correctly, as per the manual. When a tonarm isnt set correctly, what occurs with either to much or to little force. In regards to surface noise, clicks pops... and I think now rumble on the deadwax.

Also cleaning, RCM fluid vaccum, rinse with distilled, revac, air dry and play. Can a cleaning process introduce noise?

Interesting thread, now all I have is the el-cheapo Spin Clean still the best $60 I ever spent. TTs are Yamaha PX-2 with Denon DL-160, Rega Planar 2 with RB300 and AT Signet TK5e and for the shop testing of amps a Yamaha YP-B4 with a Stanton 681EEE. I rarely experience surface noise and then mainly at the start until the stylus finds the run-in groove. Clicks and pops yes when the LP is scratched. I use CoolEdit 2000 with Jeffery Klien's ClickFix plug in. Jeffrey's program lets you set many parameters and it has a feature where you can save just the bits it is removing. If you hear music in that saved bit you adjust the parameters until there is no music being removed then you run it through again only now saving what it does not remove.

I've a few Rick Nelson LPs on Decca that look VG- but play back at VG++ after a good cleaning, a treatment of a certain LAST 'lookalike' :scratch2:, and playback on an Audio Technica AT-15sla.

I think you may have hit on your problem. Try this test... On your next piece of new vinyl, play it before any cleaning, then give it your usual cleaning ritual. Is it better, or did you introduce more noise that was present to start?

I have found that it takes more rinsing than I would have thought to remove the last cleaning residues.
