SUT Camouflage!!!

When using old tubes equipment and vintage turntables, some of the more modern equipment like CD players and step up transformers (SUTs) can look out of place.

To help them blend in I’ve employed a bit of cover and concealment ;) (see photos), that’s a CD player on bottom…

One unintended consequence, their was a bit of hum at high volumes and after sliding the Denon AU 320 into its box the hums gone :)

Wood won't do anything to act as screening, but I suspect the hum was induced by the Fisher unit below the SUT. Adding the wood has increased the distance between the two. Siting the SUT farther away again might reduce hum even more.

Appreciate all the kind comments, and yes any left over material would work, used scrap cherry to hide it in the other cherry, very quick project could be implemented better but I’m not doing any complicated projects at the moment.

Excellent point reference the wood not adding shielding, my comments about the hum dissipation wasn’t meant to assign a technical cause and effect, just an observation. Also left the feet on the Denon inside the wood case for more separation, but wasn’t actually anticipating the results ;)

Very nice! I did this back about 1980. All my equipment was SS back then and I got tired of having it all stuffed into an ugly vinyl clad rack with a smoke glass door. I made cabinets for everything, integrated amp, tuner, cassette deck, and Equalizer. All were different brands, but had brushed aluminum face plates.
It all looked so much better wrapped in wood. We had a steel supplier back then and I had perforated steel cut to size for the top vent of the amp cabinet.
 
Shieldings the key. Ours are right next to the tonearms. Transformers are potted in Mu metal cans, slotted into aluminum boxes lined with copper.

I’ve been researching SUT construction, transformers and container material, and I’ve developed a concept in my head.
Anyway my rather is to have a wood case and my thoughts currently are leaning towards adding copper sheets to the box, how to incorporate the copper is another topic. I’m just not up to a complex project at the moment but that doesn’t keep me from dreaming ….The Denon is on loan from @BillWojo, thanks buddy! :thumbsup:

Hopefully I’ll get to an actual SUT build project in the near future:idea:

Thanks that’s a great resource…currently my intention is to build with HM-3 Hashimoto transformers which probably don’t need any transformer shielding, my interest was shielding the box internal wiring from outside influences, might be over kill….

Yes, the Hashimoto transformers come in shielded enclosures. The internal wiring doesn't need magnetic shielding, so ferromagnetic material isn't required. Just pay attention to the usual good wiring practices.
 
HM3/7 are expensive because of their shielding. 2.3" Mu metal can with the lid's a $100 a couple of years ago.

I also like enclosing sterile looking gear with a wood surround and I did something similar to your SUT with my intentionally simple looking DB Systems preamp and tone control. Nothing fancy but so much nicer looking than the plain metal boxes.

Regarding SUTs I have both the Hashimoto HM-3 and HM-7 and they are absolutely silent and don't seem sensitive to placement around other gear. This is the HM-3 were the transformers are sitting on the top of an all-aluminum enclosure. Internal wiring is all silver.
