Sweet Jazz Vibes (vibraphone)?

ictwoody

I like vintage gear — my preamp is from 2007.
Last night I attended a performance of kinda 20th century/experimental jazz. While I found it interesting, it isn't the kind of thing I'm into while chilling at home in front of my rig. But, it did get me thinking that I really enjoy the vibraphone as an instrument and I would love some recommendations of some great music featuring vibes.

So what should I check out? Streaming on Tidal or Spotify preferable.

Thanks!

Don't forget Lionel Hampton!

Ooh, and I second MJQ. Love their stuff!

Edited to ad: oops, I see we didn't forget Hampton. He was already mentioned above.

Oddly enough, I have been going through a period of listing to vibraphonists. To add to the previously mentioned musicians, consider Khan Jamal, Red Norvo and Walt Dickerson. It seems that Tidal has most if not all of all the artists mentioned so far.

I second Gary burton he has an amazing arc through the years in many bands

Another vote for anything Milt and MJQ.

If you wanna go a little off the beaten path search out Khan Jamal. The Traveller is a sweet album.

Tjader, MJQ, Burton & Hampton. For a specific album try Bags Meets Wes. It's available online in high rez and sounds wonderful.

I currently have some quarters in the jukebox spinning Red Norvo. Sounds great.

I was thinking about in the 1980's, WRTI in Philadelphia had a deejay names Rocky Kelly. It seems like 80 percent of his show was Lionel Hampton. Kelly LOVED Hampton. I came to like Hampton if for no other reason than Kelly's enthusiasm. But then Hampton's enthusiasm for the music was infectious as well!

Second Walt Dickerson and Khan Jamal...old Philly favorites!! 80s WRTI for sure!

add Terry Gibbs

"Impressions of a Patch of Blue" is on Tidal....great album! Sun Ra on piano and harpsichord!!

Maybe we should have cheesteaks and an Ortliebs sometime and reminisce :beerchug:

Philly is turning more into chai soy latte and artisanal tofu burger town...but I was there in the trenches in the pre-hipster 70s and 80s!

I saw Milt Jackson doing a bandwagon performance in the middle of the day in a parking lot at Penn's Landing back in 75-76 or so and I was literally the only spectator there. It was a film shoot of some type and I was just walking by. Weird, but I had a private show!

I also liked Bill Lewis on vibes, for some real old school Philly flavor.

I did see Marshall Allen in Philly the other week at the Boot and Saddle. Still some music happening there.

Dave Pike has recorded many excellent albums as a leader and sideman but I'm not sure how available his music is for streaming. A more contemporary player to check out is Stefon Harris.

Red Norvo Trio with Mingus and Tal Farlow, yes.:music:

The duo of Ralph Towner and Gary Burton have recorded a few albums together. You might like to check them out.
