Sweet Sansui Score!!! AU 717 / TU 717

I walked into a rather dumpy thrift and glanced at the electronics shelf from 20 feet away and my heart started throbbing!! I find a AU 717 Integrated Amp on one shelf and on the shelf below was the TU 717 Tuner!! They had the amp marked at $19.99 & the tuner at $25.99!!! I had a 20% off coupon making it $35 for the pair!! Sansui at BPC prices!! The amp had scratchy pots & needed cleaning & a Deoxit bath and it works perfect even the lamps except for the tuner dial lamps 2 out of 4 are burned out.
The cosmetics are very good all knobs intact. The rack handles undoubtedly protected the controls & faces. It sounds incredible. The best sounding SS amp I ever heard. Warm, articulate & powerful are the only words to describe it and my JBL 240ti's love this amp . . . smooth & punchy with gobs of bass!! In the 70's I was dying for a black faced Sansui, better late late than never!!

Now that is one great score. Congrats I have heard so much on here about the 717 and 919 I am going to have to listen to them sometime. They have to be great like all of the other Sansui gear. Again congrats on the cool find.

Great find!!!

That is way too cool. Very nice units. I am impressed and envious (a little). Congratulations you lucky dog !:D

Damn Bob you find the sweetest stuff. At first I thought it may be a cl pickup but a thrift find at $35!You lucked out big time once again.I have heard a lot of really good things about the amp.I have the tu-717 a $20 thrift find about four years ago but no luck finding the matching amp.I'm curious on what speakers you will settle with.

Welcome to the club Cactus Bob! I have both as well. I also have a 9900. I actually prefer the sound of the 717 because it has a loudness button. :)

I'm a lucky dog alright. The amp sounds a lot more powerful than the rated WPC.

Thanks, :thmbsp:

Congrats! :thmbsp:

I have a TU-717. Just a very classy sounding tuner that effortlessly pulls in stations.

negative perception

I remember when the AU 517 and AU-717 was introduced they were the first real DC amplifiers on the market. When people listened to them during the demonstration they thought the sound was thin and without depth. They sounded nothing like other amplifiers and thus not good. The reason was, in fact, that these DC amplifiers, among many other things, had a crystal-clear sound with ultra low distortion which was completely new at that time. Now we know better. :thmbsp:

Way to go Bob! That is some great gear, at an even greater price!

Thanks HP!!

I haven't tried it yet but was very impressed by the build quality inside-out. The tuning wheel is smooth as butter :thmbsp:

Wow, great scroe!

It's a scroe alright  . . . Thanks!!

Thats amazing they thought that. Yep, we know better alright :thmbsp:

Great gear, and a great price.
Next time you hear somebody bashing the thrifts just share this nugget with them.
I have seen the rack handles alone sell for what you gave for the lot.
Enjoy!:music:

I dunno who was the first with a full DC amp (the preamp on the 717 has plenty of caps in the path), but I doubt it was the 717. In any case, most amps with FET input stages omit the DC blocking cap. The loss of the cap, and the FET front end result in a very clear and natural sound that I prefer to most anything else...consumers and sales people probably noticed a bit more with the AU-717 because so many were sold.

Thanks!! I can't stand thrift bashing. It's kind of like when people go flag crazy on CL ads. I found some of my best gear when the seller posted no price because they didn't know what to price it and didn't read the CL selling rules, Cheers!

I have a KW model 600 also . . . didn't that predate the 717?

Very mixed emotions about your find.

Great that you got it. (stole it)

Sad that someone would think so little of it to give it to a thrift.

Now send me the handles!!:thmbsp:
