Sweet Sansui Score!!! AU 717 / TU 717

If I were you I'd be going through or paying someone to go through that amp. It is subject to the dreaded corrosive cap glue.
Also the filter caps look like they are bulging.

I plan on having it serviced real soon. The filter caps have leaked. It's not going to be used until that is done, thanks

I remember when the AU 517 and AU-717 was introduced they were the first real DC amplifiers on the market. When people listened to them during the demonstration they thought the sound was thin and without depth. They sounded nothing like other amplifiers and thus not good. The reason was, in fact, that these DC amplifiers, among many other things, had a crystal-clear sound with ultra low distortion which was completely new at that time. Now we know better. :thmbsp:

I remember thinking exactly the same thing about my new Kenwood KA-7100 when I bought it in 1977. The clarity and refinement of sound were a little bit foreign-sounding compared to my room-mate's Pioneer SA-7500 that I was accustomed to. But over time, I came to appreciate the Kenwood's sound- additional detail and tighter bass. Come to think of it, I think the KA-7100 was a DC amp too, and I bought it in 1977 I think..

CB, did you get the rear panel bumpers? Two pairs of those are worth MORE than what you paid.

I found a pair of these Locally for 800$:D way out of my price range.

These ones didnt have handles though I wonder why. BTW Awsome Score

The bumbers and handles were optional extras. Some have the bumpers, others do not.

Would never have thought that the bumpers would have been optional. I'm thinking about making some. Should be pretty easy the holes are there, thanks

Thanks for all the comments guys :thmbsp:

I don't believe so. I think they came with most of the units, but were just tossed if the units didn't go in the rack. At least mine did. And my brother's.

I could be wrong, though.:scratch2:

It seems a good percentage of AU and TU units do not have the bumpers. I can't imagine taking them off or not installing them for any reason.

I have a sweet sounding AU-517 and I am surprised that the AU-717 only has a few more watts, I would have thought it would be significantly higher in output.

Great Find

Great Find Man. I love going into thrift store because you never know what you will find in there.
I have the Sansui AU 20000 & the TU 9900. Excellent pieces of equipment with great rich sound.
Again great find. I feel like American Pickers sometimes and it gives me a high looking for the next great find.
I picked up a Pioneer SX 737 last week at a thrift store for $19.99 and it works great.

Thanks Dan, I alway get excited hitting the thrifts. Whether it's a couple LP's or gear or who knows what it's a lot of fun. That AU 20000 must be awesome, Bob

I was going to disagree with you, but I went in and checked mine, which I bought new in 1980. My TU717 has the bumper strips. The AU719, SE7, and SC1330 don't. I know of no reason why I would have installed one pair and not the rest. I installed the handles at the time, and mounted them in the rack. They have never been taken our since then. Also, my brother had an AU717, TU717, and SC1110. The amp died years ago, and he traded it in on some repair for something else. He recently moved, and found a box with all the paperwork for his units, with the handles still in plastic bags. No bumpers, though. Odd.:scratch2:

AU 20000 does sound great with the TU 9900. Excellent reception and very sensitive tuning. You need a good antenna with it because it is so sensitive.
