I'm certain that those knobs are original. My Scott 299 has those knobs and appears identical in every way to the original poster's amp.

I'm not sure what the full difference is between the 299A and 299B. The only difference I know of is the "christmas tree" lights of the A, versus the cylindrical shape of the B. And perhaps the chassis tube layout.

I believe my Sams PhotoFact has a 299A with its 7189's perpendicular to the faceplate, while mine and the OP's has the 7189's in a parallel mounting to the faceplate. After a full recap, my Scott appears electronically identical to the Sams, yet has a structural difference.

As far as my observations go, most 299A's have the perpendicular power tube layout, while 299B's have parallel mounting.

Since mine has the Christmas Tree lights and parallel mounted tubes, I've long suspected that it's a cross-over model. Like a 299AB, so to speak.

The new FWB SS rectifier worked great. ALL the negative voltages came up to schematic values and for some reason the pos. voltages benefited but are still about 20V low. I was able to set bias to 55ma on one ch but the other goes to end of pot travel and not quite to spec. More work to do. New 5AR4 had no affect.

If you open the tuner, would you mind checking the part number on the bottom of the transformer? My LT-110 (kit 350B) has a non-original transformer, and I'd like to see if a different Scott tuner transformer that I have laying around is the same part.

Well as a start I used orig values. I can always piggyback parallel caps to up their values if I feel the need for more bass.
Thanks for that tip, cause I am a big fan of good bass. Im not a pureist and care not about "stockness". Only best possible performance I can get.:music:

I noticed that also. Two of the Ratheon 7189A are marked Gt Britain and do have seams in the glass, but the other two are marked Raytheon Japan J20. Maybe they are not original. What do you have for 7189?

The early 299(A) has the perpendicular configuration. I have a late 299(A) with the parallel config - same as 299B. The 299B visual ques are, exposed wire wounds, bigger iron, different electrolytic can placement and of course the "hh Scott" badge was ditched for the B.

Sweet find. I love the look of the tuning dial on Scott tube tuners. I could settle for a 399 receiver some day.

My Scott 299A came with Philips (Sittard factory) 7189's, labeled for Scott. I have a backup pair of low-hour Mullard 7189's that I got from the original owner of a Fisher X-100-A which he played on and off for a year, then he put it in a closet for 40 years when he built his own system.

I'm currently running Reflektor 6P14P-K's for the heck of it. I've definitely noticed a difference in rolling preamp tubes, but I haven't noticed enough difference in power tube sound to ever consider buying NOS 7189's whenever the day may come for these Philips and Mullard quads to be retired.

Thanks a bunch for the 299A / 299B breakdown, I've been wondering about those details for quite a while.
 
Here is a close up of my Raytheon 7189 A. I am pretty sure it is a rebranded Mullard EL84 and could be original to the unit.

Looking closer at my 7189A I see pin 1 & 2 are connected together at the base, but pin 6 & 9 do not appear to be connected at the base. I think I read that a 7189 may or may not have Pin 1 & 2 connected depending on manufacturer, but all 7189A have pin 6 & 9 connected. So, my 7189A labeled tubes could the same as some 7189s, again depending on the manufacturer? Not sure if my reasoning is sound, but it is fun researching this stuff.

My 222C uses Pin 6 as tie points....I ran into this when I went to convert it to 6gk6's.

Don't know about the 299 though. Just food for thought.

Regarding the Type 350, I cleaned all the tube sockets and pins and she came roaring to life. Listening to the local community radio station. Nice sounding tuner.
