SX-1980 Recap in progress

Glad to hear all went well. That was one fast turnaround time for you! Before mine goes in I'm going to put in back in use and listen to it for a week or so and "try" to document what I think is weak as far as sound goes. But I know that is hard if they are gone for any length of time. Mine sounds good already but just is nothing i would call special. It does not stand out amongst my others to where I can say it's head and shoulders above. Maybe they are not to begin with, but I'll never know unless it gets the full treatment. I have never bragged about my 1980 except for it's tuner capabilities because I don't feel sound wise it is anything special. I do hope all that changes though. I'm glad to hear you like the way yours sounds, enjoy!

And with a total recap ---it will be night and day difference.
Both my 1250's sound a whole lot better since Echowars got done with them.Trust me on this comment.

They do sound like night and day after 30 years of use when recapped. I could NEVER remotely think about turning the volume half way up with my, redesigned, what was once Infinity Kappa 8s. See seperate link. http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=335786 Granted I wont be doing it that often but the 1980 doesnt even break a sweat when I do it since recapped. As with JHS2RT - Its definitely night and day & you will notice the difference.

Having a stroke. I removed the amp grill cover to take a peek at the caps that he used. Guess what I saw? THE ORIGINALS! I specifically said I wanted the entire unit recapped and I was told yes. Yes Yes and YES. Nonetheless, I just called and asked again after I mentioned I took a look inside. "Oh, I only did the the power supply board and the ones that were below value or open" I am mad as hell right now and I don't know what I should do. Granted it sounds better than ever and the FM is amazing but I feel that when I asked for a total recap that would mean every F'n one. MAD AS HELL. DOES ANY1 EVER TELL THE TRUTH ANYMORE? I just don't get it.

I would be mad as heck too.But since the unit is preforming to your liking --I think I would let well enough alone.
BUT --I know that is easier said than done.
It's ashame you have too spell everythibg out in detail. He should have know they were 30years old and changed them anyway~~~Oh Well......sorry for your misfortune.

You had an advance indicator, the four HUGE main capacitors at 22,000uf 100v are closer to 100 dollars apiece than 50 bucks each...

The other capacitors however....... :gigglemad

ESPECIALLY considering that the labor to check them (out of circuit for accuracy) is comparable to the labor to replace them....

edit - and a SX-1980 power supply demands a HELL of a lot more than a recap..... :nono:
While I can knock one (with plenty of practice) out in a day, I prefer to take two days...

Unbelievable.:thumbsdn: If I were to EVER do that, I will personally ask someone to hit me upside the head with a hammer several times. That sucks man, sorry to hear you got screwed.

Doesn't make sense to me Y he would do this - I basically gave him a blank check to do the worK - was willing to pay him big bucks. @ Mark - I told him to leave the 22Ks alone and recap everything else. I think I am going to sleep on this. I do trust the guy cause he is brilliant - but do I bring it back and tell him to complete it like I originally asked him to do? I think he will talk me out of it cause he said they don't need to be changed but I really want them done. So confusing and frustrating.

You should just be thankful that its home, it works great, and that you are lucky enough to even own a 1980.. i know it helps me sleep at night.. Be Happy!!!

If you want them done ---YOU ARE HIS CUSTOMER----be polite and tell him you'd feel better with new cans---I wish you the best of luck and let us know "the rest of the story"........

Three points:

#1. $478.00 would be a world class bargain to recap a 1980. I'm getting ready to do one, and the four big power supply caps are costing me $250 all by themselves. Needless to say, the grand total will be substantially higher than $500, so I'm not surprised that you have found that 'what you wanted him to do' vs 'what he actually did' are substantially different.

#2. He should NOT be misleading you about the work done...sounds like he wanted to you believe the unit was totally recapped and only fessed up when you looked inside (which begs the question: how did he think this was something you'd not notice?). If, on the other hand, this is a simple lack of communication, then he has seriously shirked his responsibility to keep you informed on what was done. Admittedly, most electronics customers could give a rat's ass as long as it works, but you are a bit better informed than most and went to him with specific instructions on what you wanted done.

#3. Most retail repair shops do NOT have the time to tackle something like a recapping job, much less on something like a Pioneer SX-1980. It is a very time consuming job, and places like that make their money from throughput...get it in, get it working, get it out, get your money, get the next project...boom, boom, boom. If they actually agreed to replace every cap, and billed you accordingly, you'd probably have a coronary when you saw the bill since they likely charge by the hour at a rate that would make a plumber blush.
