SX-650 and HPM-60 compatibility

I own an SX-650 that I've kept in pristine condition and I have the opportunity to purchase a pair of HPM-60's (cloth surrounds) that are in very good condition and sound great.

Will the SX-650 have enough power to make these speakers worth having, and is $100 for the pair a fair deal. Having looked on ebay, and other sites, it looks like that price is in the ballpark.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to AK!
Those speakers would be fine with the 650.
If you're comfortable with the price, go for it.
There are always people who find great stuff for free, but I'm not one of them.

Thanks. I wasn't quite sure about the price, but I was more concerned that the 650 would not have the reserve power to really make these speakers work. The upside is that I can return them if I'm not happy.

Or, I can move up to a bigger x50.

Btw, are those cabinets easy to refinish?

I beleive they are vinyl, at least mine are. If you do a search here ( reveneering etc. ) You will find lots of info.

I'm listening to a pair of HPM-60's right now and using less then 2 watts. With 92.5db 1 watt 1 meter it takes very little to light up HPM's

$100.00 for 60's is a bargain. I just drove to Chicago from Mi. to get my second pair for 265.00 plus 65.00 for gas and tolls.

Thanks to all who posted. Unfortunately I have to update. I bought those speakers last weekend; even took the sx-650 and hooked it up. Sounded really good so I took them home and hooked everything up. I put Zeppelins "No Quarter" on, tone controls are flat, loudness is off, the first time Jonesy's bass comes in, I hear a fuzz from the left speaker. That's not good. I pull the grill off and look, and there is a split in the 4" mid that runs from the dustcap all the way to the surround. I'm not sure what caused this. I only had the volume up less than a quarter, and all my connections were right.

The guy says the x-over may be bad.

Any ideas? Thanks

btw, speakerfreak, I like those floor to ceiling 40, 60, 100's

I would have to think the split was already there??? Typically even if overdriven the cone will not split at all, and the Xover going bad is an extreme long shot, but possible. What is the p.n. on your mid?

I'll see if I have one but in the meantime these are on ebay all the time so finding one should be a piece of cakke. I'd replace the Xover caps just in case, or maybe someone has messed with it already - you'll find out when you take it out. This is setback but easy to correct.

The left cabinet on the bottom is a 900. Hopefully I'll be getting another set of 100's so the 900's can move to the other half of the system

Are you running all those HPM's in at the same time? I used to have four pairs of 100's and the most I could run was two pairs!

You were correct. I took the speaker back, and the guy pulled it and said the same thing. He applied some stuff called Araflex to the back side of the speaker and said that it would not be a problem anymore. I had him test the xover, and it works. He told me if I'm still not happy, to bring them back at the end of the week. He said he would have no problem selling them.

I mentioned to him while we were at his workbench that even though these sounded really warm in a room that was full of equipment, and not acoustically good, they still sounded too bright in my home. I knew that elevating them off the carpet a few inches can change the way they sound, but then I mentioned that my cd player was a late 1980's model Sony. He said maybe that is the issue and not the speakers. My knowledge of cd electronics is not that good, but I remember that the 1st generation players had different filters - brickwall(?), and lower sampling rates- and that may cause the sound to be a little brighter than it should be. So, I'm currently looking for a single disc cd player that's 2nd or 3rd generation,

I'm currently watching some mids on ebay, and I'm going to try to get one just for replacement purposes. I'm also going to re-read one of the posts on re-veneering, and see if I can make these things look like new again.

Thanks for your help on the mid. Any comments on the rest of this would be greatly appreciated.

WOW! Lookin' good! To have vintage Pioneer silver in Fluoroscan and 'conventional' along w/ the tape decks and TT's and speakers is truly somethin'. :thmbsp:

Have you tried adjusting your mid and high level controls on the back of the 60's? I have mine set at -1 all the way around but it depends upon your room accoustics and suroundings, walls, windows, etc. Raising them up off of the floor is a must. Try to get the mids about ear level when your seated and toed in slightly to adjust for center staging. Then sit back and enjoy like I have for 33 years with mine.
