SX-750 recap

Integrated Circuit, won't be replaced, doesn't HAVE to be on the list, but I can deal with it being there.. :D

just transistors, diodes, electrolytic capacitors (cea, cssa, csza, ceanl, ceb), trim pots (vr1 semi-fixed)

In the meantime, should I replace the speaker relay? I know this is a part that can sometimes cause trouble. The current one works perfectly fine, I'm wondering if despite its good working order it would still be worthwhile to replace it. How much does a new one cost?

as for the semiconductor and pot section, I have to sort out a lot of things you should not touch.

I have been following this tread closely here lately because I also have a SX750 that needs some TLC. I'm hoping I can do most everything myself with the exception of the re-alignment on the tuner. Don't have access to a "Distortion Meter", and as MTF said "we shouldn't touch some things". I'm not sure if my amplifier needs a refurbish job, it's working and I don't plan on "cranking it". Is there a (easy) way to find out if it needs to be worked on? Kudos to you guys who did all the work building the BOM. I have some beginner questions. What's the best sequence to recap the boards. Do you use the DBT after every board recap or do some boards (filter and muting) need to be DBT'ed in conjunction with other boards? Brand names have been mentioned in this thread but as long as I obtain the "best" component for the job does it matter who makes them? Thanks for your help.

Best to do the power supply 1st. I do protection board, then amp(s), tone control board, preamps, and EQ boards. And YES a DBT power up is recommended after EACH BOARD to make sure you didn't add any AW SH**'s.

Electrolytic Caps age whether they are used or not. And the manufacturers have said 20 years is the life span for caps then they become unreliable. Basically they dry out and short. The larger the cap is, the longer it takes to evaporate the electrolyte. So the Filter caps are the last one's to replace. So consider this. Would you take a 1970 Z-28 out of the garage after 30 years and run it across country after just chanrging the battery and filling the tank???? I hope not! You refresh all the safety systems (brakes, front end parts, tires, change oil, trans fluid, brake fluid, PS Fluid, drain and fill the rear, etc.) before even letting it hit the road. Replacing the caps would now be analogous to changing the plugs @100,000 miles on most cars today. Think of it as a 30 year tune up.

Theoretically you can use what you want as long as they meet the noise and leakage spec. The Nichicons that Mark advocates are proven components. I've been using them for at least 4-5years now and haven't had one go or arrive bad. Mark looks at the design engineering that PIONEER did on these and actually puts parts in that are uprated from the original. This gives the parts some working headroom that the originals didn't have. PIONEER and most of the manufacturers put in parts that were in a lot of cases barely able to maintain functionality at the high operating tempo's they were working at. for instance, a lot of caps had only 1 or 2 volts working headroom (ie: 50V cap in a 48VOLT circuit). Same thing with transistors. Some of the transistors used were at the extreme edge of the envelope as far as SAFE operating area (SOA) is concerned. So the replacement parts are uprated, and operate more toward the middle of the SOA.

So when you've overhauled a PIONEER using the parts Mark lists, it'll actually work more efficiently, run cooler, and sound better as it's not straining like it was before in most cases. And chances are good that operating spec's will be a hell of a lot better. For example the 1010 I did back in 2009-10 benched 95WPC @.8% THD @ 1KHz at clipping. After I did a total recap, and transistor replacement (including new ONSEMI outputs), it did 124 @.1% THD in the LEFT Channel and 125 in the right with the same distortion at clipping. I'll bet my 737 and 939 will show proportionally close to the same results for their ratings. I DO KNOW my 434 (15wpc by factory), went to 21wpc @ .8%THD / 1KHZ / 8ohms per channel @ clipping.
The above are my personal observations and your mileage may vary.

They then list a RoHS version 647-UKL1H2R2MDDANA. Does it have the right/proper specs? Need 2 for AWM-94 and 4 for AWE-073. Suggestions wanted please. Thanks.

If you use the mouser compare feature you will see that the only difference appears to be the mounting. You ordered a "snap in" mounting?

Otherwise the specs indicate the ratings and size being the same.

Most of the suffix's have to do with lead type, mounting, and how it's packed (bulk, ammo tape, etc.) The basic cap info is the same.

RoHS version is "lead FREE" among other things that are immaterial to our purpose. It's more for gov't compliance to EPA spec more than anything else. It's also slightly more expensive in the long run (500caps @ $.02 difference average is $10.)

As long as the Value, voltage and model (UKL) is adhered to, get which ever one floats yer boat. I tend to the cheapest version but only after checking the lead type.

OK in that case I'll adjust things a bit and order what works. I don't see how anyone keeps all them AADDMMFF suffix's straight in their head any way. Is MTF still pondering on the Q list? Thanks.

No need to get in any hurry on this project, Mouser has some of the power supply caps back ordered until 10/08/2013... Gives me a chance to practice up on my soldering skills.
 
Bob; We can start with the "Problem child" transistors.
And these are not necessarily in the 750 but generally in most SX-xxx from that era. They are the most common of the "problem child" type. File this in your GENERAL FUND OF KNOWN PIONEER PROBLEM PARTS Folder.

This is not a problem child as I remember but has caused a few of us problems with pin layout when the wrong one ordered inadvertently.
2sa733 - KSA733 (WATCH OUT FOR THE KSA733Cxxx as the C is CENTER COLLECTOR as in ECB rather than EBC). It caught me a couple times (DAMNED LAWYER's Fine Print!) DOWNLOAD EVERY DATA SHEET FOR EACH TRANSISTOR TYPE AS YOU ORDER THEM. They ALL have the Pinout's for Each one. PIN DOWN, FLAT SIDE with WRITING TOWARD YOU, LEFT TO RIGHT!

I did a little searching on general stuff I've done that is very similar. DON'T ORDER anything until MARK VETS THIS. I'm not 100% sure on a few of them. (Mark; The one's with a (?) are the ones I'm not sure about.) I searched the transistor # in the search this Forum function, then looked for posts on units that were equal to power or higher power than the 750 then looked for the same type of board with that particular transistor. the results came from mainly Mattsd's lists for his 1980 rebuild, a 1010 list, and a 7730. All were under 3 months old.

In any event the new substitutes will work for either, provided I did ok with the search. AGAIN! DO NOT USE THIS LIST UNTIL MARK vets it. Does "dead as a moth in a SX-750" rank any where close to "a mouse at a barn dance"? See attached picture. 'larryderouin' I'm unsure if the information on page 65 of the SM affects me or not. My unit has so much dirt/dust in it that I can hardly read any of the writing on the boards. So my first order of business is to get most of the dirt off the pieces and parts. Then I would hope that I can figure out whether I'm using AWK-065 or an IC. With all of Marks "leave them alone" comments maybe it won't matter. Then hopefully by that time I can start looking around for additional cap vendors if Mouser don't come through sooner. Thanks for all the research time you guys have spent already. BTW 'markthefixer' I've not aware of any unpolished information that came from you.

Bob; Start a NEW Thread, so that you have unfettered and single unit activity. Multiple units on a thread, even one this old gets confusing for those of us doing the helping. The parts lists can be moved.

Marks "leave them alone" meaning if it's working, leave......" For the same reason i put it in mine. Unless they are bad (blown), they usually don't need replacement.

Clean it up, take pictures of both the top and bottom of the unit, with a close up of the area detailed in the manual on page 65. We'll be able to tell whether IC or Extra board. POST ON THE NEW THREAD!
