Sx 828

I recently picked-up an SX 828 and am wondering what the black door on the right side of the cabinet is for.

It is moving coil transformer for MC cartridges. It works quite well. The SX-828 was my first piece of hifi equipment, purchased new in 1974. I still own it and the receiver still functions like new with an incredible FM section which produces CD-like sound.

I've still got my smaller-brother SX-626 that I bought new in '71 or '72 as well! That whole SX-x2x series of Pioneer receivers were built like tanks. Mine is still working well too, but is showing its age and does need a little freshening up on the bench in the form of lamps and caps. I had no idea that the '828 could take MC phono cartridges? :scratch2: Have you ever used yours with a MC cartridge? How did it sound? The phono stage in my '626 sounds great with MM cartridges, but the receiver itself is not a real high resolution design. I would think that the highly detailed reproduction of a MC cartridge might be lost on the rest of the system. What has your experience been?

No, I haven't used it with a TT so I can't comment on the sound.

I'm having some problems with it right now. That are being addressed in a separate thread.

I also have a SX727 that I purchased new. It still works just fine after all the years and is in mint condition.

Enjoy your 626. I like the blue dial of that series.

I've owned all the SX-x2x receivers EXCEPT the 828! It is a sweet machine, indeed!

SX424 (gave to my oldest son), SX525 (sold it), SX626 (currently own), SX727 (I owned this for 10 years but lost it when it was fried when lightening hit the FM rooftop antenna it was attached to). I currently also own a slightly newer SX-780.

Awsome tuner, I use mine as a tuner when not using my Mac tube tuners and is second only to my Mac tuners. I also use it during portions the summer when an all tube system pumps out too much heat. I love the build quality silver and blue face and wood case, hard to beat the looks or value. They seem to still be under the radar on value.
