Symdex Sigma Omega Combo

Picked these up Sunday and have not had much time with them, but they sound fantastic. Came with original boxes too. Nice gloss black. The sigma is a two way. It has four pin holes in the cabinet which attach to the gold plated pins sticking out of the Omega woofer cabinet. Grills are foam and glued in place, so no pics of the drivers.
I am happy with the sound, and will be making some changes to accommodate these. Info is scarce online, making the decision to buy was tough. Glad I did though.

Did you get these in Massachusetts? From an auction site?

I remember going to listen to the Sigmas at an audio place on Commonwealth Ave. Upstairs, not the place in the Hancock Center (which was a fun place to visit, too). Good sound, but without the subwoofer, not full range enough to justify the price - I was cheap even then. And I had a pair of Fried Qs, and was getting a pair of IMF TLS 50s, so felt I was doing okay speakerwise.

oh YOU got those! Nice find Todd. I want them when you are done. I have 2 pair of Sigmas. Most transformative speakers I have heard.

Yes, they came from an auction. One more bid and I would have lost them.
I spent an hour with them tonight. I am running them with an Apt power amp and an agi 586 pre amp. Also a Rotel CD player.
They might end up at the next fest for show and tell.

That bid was me! You beat me by 10 bucks

The drivers in the Sigma are Audax, FYI. 1” coated silk dome and 6” composite cone woofer with a large magnet. I’ll get model numbers tomorrow

When/if I part with them, will let you know
Here is a pic of the top of the woofer, showing the pin assembly

I've had a pair of the uppers for several years now. Never seen the lowers for sale, though. NAT is right about them being shy in the bass on their own. So I was planning on listing them on CAM soon. Have better pictures than Todd's here.

Here's my first pair. They look like poop, but they sound incredible.

If anyone is keeping score on the design, the little black box positioned next to the tweeter behind all the fluff is the cap/filter for the tweeter.
the inductor is hand-wound inside the woofer enclosure. The coil is soldered directly to the terminals and to the woofer and wound on an 8mm video reel. Not kidding.

So the tweeter is mounted more or less in free air?
Is the woofer vented/ported and the tweeter in the vent/port (like a couple of EVs and the little Altec Verde), or is the cabinet sealed? And why are the woofers both shifted to the left? I get that it makes sense to locate a driver assymetrically, but couldn't they have handed them? It's not like they were going to sell so many that making them in pairs would have been impossible. But I'm carping - I hope at least one pair shows up at the Frankenfest.

Agree, my pictures suck. Room began minimal daylight and chandelier just offers glare.

My cynical response is, like Vandersteens, these cabinets were made by someone who was not great at making cabinets. The foam covers were glued on to hide the incredibly ugly, but acoustically effective, tweeter layout.

yes the tweeter essentially sits in “free air”. The bass enclosure is sealed and small.

Hmm - I remember one of, if not the, the most striking audio experiences of my life, listening to Vandersteens on Mitch Cotter electronics at Take Five in New Haven. I've never heard so three dimensional a sound stage - you felt you could wander among the instruments (whether that was actually a natural and accurate presentation of the jazz combo is possibly worth considering, but I didn't at the time...).
I hadn't heard of Vandersteens at the time, and read their literature which spoke of how precise their wood cutting equipment was, so I'm surprised at your comments about their enclosures - certainly they are made to be functional rather than aesthetic, but with the foam over them, they look just fine to my eyes. Certainly I like acres of lovely wood veneer, but I recognize that it costs a lot - I'm sitting here with the leatherette (if that is what it is supposed to look like, not that it does) and bus stop aesthetic punched metal grill Sequerra Metronome 7s. Hideous until the music starts, and then all if forgiven.

That’s why it was a cynical Comment. a confident wood worker wouldn’t hide their cabinet design behind 2 yards of cloth.

But ya, I have 2Ce Signatures and they are lovely to listen to.

I like Sequerra's. Never heard the 7's hooked to the woofer, I am sure it would have been awesome.

I have a set here with the 8W. There’s something up with one of the Met7 drivers but even with that issue the combination is really good.
