Synergisitics Model S-62A speakers - WOW!

Let me start from saying that I am in no way any expert when it comes to stereo equipment. I try different things as they come up, read a lot here and other places and learn from all this. I never had any experience with real "Hi End" stuff, but by now I have managed to put together a few decent systems that I'm pretty happy with, as well as I have a couple of friends with the interest in audio stuff, so I can say that I have hears a few different sets of speakers and amps/receivers.
A couple of months back I was helping my very good friend to put a system together and we came across a pair of Klipsch KG4 speakers in good condition at a good price. He purchased them and when we got them to his home I was very impressed with them. I read a lot of good things about these, but hearing them in person made me understand why these speakers are so popular and highly praised. I am very happy for my friend and even was a bit jealous (in a good way) , but I didnt have a budget for KG4s anyway, yet decided to save up and find me a pair as well.
Meanwhile I came across a pair of Synergistics S-62A speakers in fair condition and very cheap. While there is not that much info on them here or other places, I decided to give them a try. And I am so glad I did!
These speakers sound wonderful. Full rich bass, superb mids and great highs - and this is at all controls set to 0 (bass and treble). Adjusting those or adding equalizer makes these speakers sing even better. I tried them with 3 different amps so far and they sound good with all of them! Even my little Akai 20WPC amp drives them easy and everything sounds sweet! And as far as sound goes - to my ear they sound somewhat similar to KG4 speakers. Not the same - as speaker design is completely different, but that what they remind me most of. To the point - I dont crave Klipsch anymore and these Synergistics were originally planned to be my basement workroom system (thats where I have them now) will be moving to one of my main systems either replacing Advents Heritage or JBL CF120's.
While I dont know for sure, but my research indicates that these have some connection to the famous RTR speakers and use Alnico magnets in their woofers and tweeters. Mids, I think, were made in Europe some place - Belgium or something. Not sure about the Supertweeter. Here are some pics:







So, I'd say if you come across a pair - I really think they are worth considering. I would also like to hear from people that do/ or have had experience with these speakers or brand.

I also enjoyed reading your post and consider myself to be an appreciator of under loved speakers. No experience with this brand but I never know what might catch my ear next. Thanks for sharing and enjoy!

Though they were mostly focused on the low end (no shame in that -- those are the speakers that people actually buy), the Synergistics I have heard punched above their price levels. And yours appear to be among their more ambitious offerings.
 
Thanks for all the comments! I too like to try different speakers - have to stay within my budget, plus wife only allows so many of them in the house at any given time, but it's fun and looks like can be very rewarding at times to find gems like these.
 
Nice looking Synergistic's, I bet they're heavy too.

I just picked up some RTR EXP-12's at Goodwill a couple day ago, and they are shockingly good...FUN STUFF... I just re-capped them, and they're better yet!

I'm trying to find out the make and model of this mid-tweeter driver, it's really nice sounding. Ugly mother though....

About 1980 or so a friend bought a set of synergistic speakers that looked very similar to the pair you have. He had them hooked up to a Phase Linear amp. They were an ok sounding speakercompared to the other two sets be owned, ADS-L810, and the Bose 901. The consensus among the few of us was 1.ads 2.Synergistic, and 3.Bose. If.my memory serves me correctly, t the Synergistic were kind of a standard direct facing speaker, with a "reflecting" driver that kind of mimicked the Bose idea.
 
Well, here is a funny thing - I came across a couple of pairs of Synergistics at a local vintage dealer. His are not the same model - I think one down from mine - S-52a - didnt have the supertweeter and look slightly smaller. Priced at $300. Dont sound anywhere near as good as mine. Maybe his room/set-up is not very good, or possibly something is not working correct in them. So I can see how some people can overlook these. But I think for a right price they are worth giving them a chance. I'm glad I did and now they are my most listened speakers in the house (I have 9 pairs at the moment and like all of them - some more, some less).
 
In RTR and Synergistic speakers, the x-overs are minimalist, but they generally sound better than you would think.. pretty cool speakers. A re-cap will work well. Ive done two now, and it does help.

My first set of speakers was a pair of S23 Still have them, but I had to replace the foam surrounds on them. That's when I found the passive radiator was just a piece of cardboard with some sort of foam covering but decent foam surrounds. After refoaming, and replacing the "cardboard" and foam covering, they still sound decent but the bass alignment isn't perfect (not sure how it was originally.) Assume the new surround doesn't have quite the same compliance. Cool thing is the refoam kit I ordered had 2 style surrounds included, the flat style fit the passive radiator and the angled style fit the driver. The S23 is minimalist but nice sounding for a high school budget at the time.
 
Minimalist crossovers are a good thing if the drivers work well with them -- the more complex the crossover, the more difficult it may be for the amp to drive, and since passive components can't amplify, the only way they can contour sound is to turn electrical energy into heat, so they cut down on efficiency.

Morning all,
Sorry to revive this old thread but it made me purchase a set of these locally for $50. I'm rebuilding a Pioneer SX-450 (20wpc) and am hoping they will sound nice with a little bit of work of course.

Those look good! And they are easy to re-cap. I'd clean the pots as well. And check that all the tweeters work - mine had a couple out when I got them, but I was able to find originals on ebay and they are terrific now. I hope you will enjoy them. Post your impressions when you get them and listen to them.
