Tannoy Crossover Recap- which caps to use?

Hi all,

I want to recap the Crossovers in my Tannoy Gold 12"s as they are now about 45 years old. I've heard that one AK'er redid his quite successfully with rather expensive Sonicaps, here:

But...I am wondering of the value of doing this vs. cheaper (but still high quality) caps. Seeking opinions and/or experiences with different caps.

5% tolerance Daytons are likely going to be quite a bit better than the original parts, even when they were new.

The Daytons are what I was thinking, too. For budget caps, they should work well. The voicing of the Tannoys (slightly mellow and rolled of on the very top) should work very well with the Dayton caps- it might actually "pep them up" a bit on the highs.

Finally getting round to ordering the Dayton 5% caps from Parts Express, for my Tannoy crossover recap project! You'd recommended the 5% tolerance, I presume that the 1% tolerance with otherwise identical specs would be even better? They are a bit more expensive but not prohibitively so.

Tony Gee just recently reviewed the Bennic FPP 400VDC and the Bennic XPP 400VDC capacitors. These are the same as the Dayton 1% and 5% capacitors. Tony liked the sound of the 1% parts better than the 5% caps.

I've only used the Dayton 5% capacitors, so I can't comment on the differences. On my Acoustic Research AR1MS speakers, the 5% caps 'seemed' to have a nice and deep soundstage, with a warm midrange, but with a very sibilant pronounced "SSSsss" spittiness on the top end. I used the speakers several weeks, and the sibilance remained. So, I added 0.01uF Auricap bypass caps to the tweeter caps, and Dayton 0.1uF Film and Foil bypass caps to the woofer shunts. That settled down the spittiness, to where it was no longer objectionable. I'm not trying to imply that the Dayton caps are bad. Far from it. But, they are entry level poly caps. SoniCaps, Clarity Caps, and Mundorf caps are probably a step up in quality (IMHO).
