Tannoy Monitor Gold Heathkit ... help identify speaker and improve?

Hi,

My first post to the forum...

A few years ago my uncle passed away and when we cleared out the home I took all the audio equipment. 2 stereo receivers (nothing great) and these speakers that mom said that he built from a Heathkit. Fast forward... I finally open up the speakers (screws on back panel) to add binding posts (the only mod I've made thus far) as the old way to connect the speakers was limited to stereo mini jack cord and was the reason I had not yet tried them out. To my surprise (only after I googled them) the speakers inside are Tannoy Monitor Gold 12".
Looking around online for Heathkit speakers I think these are Heathkit AS101 or some variation.

Dimensions of the enclosure are, not counting the flared top and bottom, 21" width, 23" height, 14" depth.

My questions are:

1. From the pictures below what do you think this speaker is?

2. The inside has cheap carpeting from the 60's or 70's, is there anything I can do to improve the acoustic material? What is best to add? Can it be improved?

3. Any other improvements to suggest?

I don't see anything "Heathkit" about them.

Replace the carpet, foam and whatever else was stuck in there with some 1 inch fiberglass like OC 703.

Get that crap out from between the driver and baffle.

Cabinet looks too small to be any facsimile of an AS-101, yet might be a little large for the monitor gold 12. There are dedicated Tannoy forums, and i'd be posting there to see how far from ideal these cabinets might be.
 
Nothing Heathkit about this speaker at all, that enclosure also looks like period correct Tannoy practice. This is also a superb loudspeaker, keep it for life.
 
I agree that you should do something about the cabinet damping and get the driver mounted flush to the baffle without that green foam between them. The cabs may be a little large for those drivers, but I'd at least give them a try with new damping first and then research the cabinet volume. I'm also very jealous. I bet those will end up sounding incredible.
 
I really appreciate all the good advice. Thank you! Sounds like I have my work cut out for me doing research on cabinet volume and Tannoy speakers.
