TD 160 Issue

Hello,

I have a Thorens TD 160 that "bumps" or "scratches" against something when I put the larger metal disc on. It seems to straight, I can't see a wobble. Any ideas?

go to theanalogdept.com and hit the Thorens area then the TD-160 area and then suspension tuning. Should fix it right up.

suspension probably needs some tweaking. If its a banging noise, that'll be the platter bottoming out against the safety post. If the post were missing, it would be smashing the motor pulley and probably wrecking the motor.

The larger metal disk is called the "Outer Platter". It sits on the "Inner Platter"

Take the outer platter and flip it upside down. Place the now inverted outer platter on top of the inner platter, it will fit into it just fine. Then turn on the table and observe. This allows you to see what exactly is going on underneath the outer platter during operation.

Look to see what is going on. See if the belt is rubbing against something. See if the outer platter is sinking too low, etc.

Can you describe this rubbing/bumping noise a bit more?

A picture would help too.

Few quick notes.

Keeping your pulley, belt, and inner platter surface clean is very important on Thorens decks. To clean the pulley and the surface of the inner platter where the belt runs, take some rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol, higher % the better, and a que tip and scrub the pulley belt surface and the inner platter belt surface. Especially on the pulley, you will see black grime come off. For cleaning your belt, take a paper towel and put some warm water on it and with the paper towel between your index finger and your thumb, LIGHTLY pull the belt through the paper towel.

A good rule of thumb with these decks is that if you don't know if you have a genuine Thorens belt, just get one. The belt can make or break these tables. You can get them from Q-Audio and Vinyl Nirvana, both have websites.

It is possible also that you need to oil/lubricate your platter axel bearing and bearing well. A lot of people use different things, some use gun oil, some sewing machine oil, etc.

We would be able to give you some better advice if you post them pictures. But something you should especially take note of is if your belt is rubbing against the metal speed changing arm (that bastard metal arm next to your motor pulley). I've had this problem before and it is fixed with a combination of proper suspension setting and proper motor angle.

turned out to be a burr on the spindle/post, the one near the rear left corner with the slot screw head. i filed it slightly and the noise went away. but i'm thinking...how could the PO have been using it this way?

He wasn't, you need to adjust the suspension. The post you filed was the safety post don't file it anymore. :nono:

yeah, if its whacking the post, the platter is too close to it. It should never touch that post. It only exists to save the motor from out of adjustment springs.

you know, later after i filed it I thought i shouldn't have done it. but i barely removed any material. i was testing it on the hearth in front of my fireplace. the hearth is made of flat stone which is smooth, but not exactly level. if i reposition the TT the scraping comes back. i guess i need to find a level surface and then adjust the suspension. Is there a sticky or post on how to do this?
