Hello everyone,

I have to get rid of one of my turntables. Between a Thorens TD 160 and a Pioneer PL 61 which one would you keep?

Any thoughts?

PS: I just bought a Thorens TD 124 MkI, no room for all of those.

Move the TD160 out. The Pioneer is the rarer of the two and still a nice example of belt drive offering from its era. The TD124 will most likely take up most of your $$ getting it built up to a nice example of the better idler wheel tables from its era.

That's a tough one. I have a TD 160 that I will never part with. I also have a Pioneer PL-41D which is very nice but not as nice as the PL-61. Yes the Pioneer is more rare but spare parts (if needed) are also rare.
 
I cast my vote for the TD-160. It's a landmark in turntable evolution and if I had to choose a TT to "save the world", that would be it. There's nothing in the TT world that can generate such a quality of sound in respect to such simplicity (perhaps the preceding AR-XA comes close). It's an engineering pinnacle that stands out for simplicity, durability, quality, usability and perhaps aesthetics too. That's why I'd choose to keep a TD-160 - Respect!!!

Damn, now I am confused :-)
 
The brochure for the PL talks so much about that special poly belt that if you can't get one the tt may not live up to the promise of its specs. The TD-160, well they made a dozen of those so which one are you talking about?

I would lean to the rarity of the PL as the TDs are all over the place if you make a mistake and gotta double up your Thorens. But then you could up your TD game and get a TD-160 Super or TD-125 to go with the rubber wheel drive 124.

Just bought myself a one owner PL-61 to go into my collection of TT's, yes I have the luxury of having a few to use at any given time. I have the TD-160, Technics SL-1200 Mk II, Linn LP12, PL-41 and now a PL-61 to add to the collection. I sold my Rega and also my PL-L1000 a little while ago. I think I'll stick to the ones I've got now.
