Teac a-7030 Dummy Plug

Hi. I just got a Teac A-7030 (not SL or GSL). On delivery the dummy plug (on right when looking from the rear) was not in the socket.
Does it need to be? If yes, is there a certain pin alignment to watch out for?
I don’t want to power ip/test the machine until I know what will happen with the plug.
It is part #22 in the rear panel schematic.

The plug looks like it is keyed and will only go in one way.
 
The dummy plug on units like these plug into the remote socket and ordinarily provide appropriate connections to enable operation of the transport system controls. The center plastic portion of the plug should have a key on it that is oriented between two of the metal pins on the plug. The center portion of the remote socket should also have a matching keyway in its center opening. The key and keyway are used to make sure that the proper connections are made when the plug is inserted into the socket.

Thank you. I’ll take a long look at it. I’d hate to damage the machine by either leaving it out or matching the pins wrong.
I’ll post the results.
 
IIRC the dummy plug and socket have a ridge which means it can only go in one way.

I don't think so, but it has been a long time since I looked at one...IIRC no dummy plug - no function of controls. Don't recall any malfunctions where the reels were locked.

Puzzling…dummy plug in, all looks good, but transport locked. I don’t know if it’s a malfunction or not, since it’s locked.

There is no transport lock, the brakes are on. They may be sticking a bit if the machine hasn't been used in a long time. You should be able to turn the reels a bit to thread it, but what you can do to exercise the brakes is:
1. With no tape loaded, hold the right hand tape lever / guide up.
2. Push FF. Both reels should turn.
3. Push stop. Both reels should stop.
4. Push Rewind. Both reels should turn.
5. Push stop, both reels should stop.
6. Push play. Pinch roller should come up and both reels should turn.
7. Push stop, pinch roller drops and reels stop.
Now try threading it.
 
Good advice, thanks. Tried all your steps, braking still on. I’m starting to think I bought a lemon. Which, unless you have scurvy, is not a good thing.

If the reels never turned, the brakes are jammed in the on position. Probably dried up grease or contamination on the brake pads. If you know which end of a screwdriver to hold you can fix it yourself.

Thank you and all the responders. Unfortunately I’ll be returning the deck to the seller as non-functional.

This makes sense as to the problem. If I dared to lose my opportunity to return the deck, but I’m not a technician, how would I go about this (if you’ve time to explain). I have the service manual but the user guide isn’t available.

The reason is I want to change the voltage from 110/60, which I use in my step-down transformer, to 240/50 is so I can run it direct. The deck came from Canada where it is 110/60.
The seller said the voltage change would fix the locked reels problem. Not sure but it’s worth a try. I think pages 13 & 14 cover the change.

even with the plug in place, its quite possible all the grease on the mechanism has turned to wax over the years locking the transport in place. Have you tried to fast wind the deck in either direction. Play mode may not work until you remove the front panel, clean the old grease that has turned to wax over the years and relube.
