Teac AD-RW900 ???

I'm not entirely sure I'm posting this in the correct forum, but I'll give it a shot.
At the thrift store today and picked up this odd piece, a Teac AD-RW900, a Tape deck/CD/CDR/RW/USB/MP3/Recorder.
I bought it because it was curious looking and cheap and brand new. Like, never used brand new. The AC chord was still wrapped with the factory twist tie and cables were in a plastic bag factory taped to the exterior, just missing the box.
I started doing some research and glanced at E(vil)-Bay and, I know everything on that site is inflated but $680.00?, $750.00?
What gives? The only thread I could find here on AK said they were shoddy, or some other unflattering review, and that Tascam was the "good" version, or the Denon etc.
However when I began reading about the Tascam, it noted that it was using Teac's technology and what-not.
Can anyone shed some light on this thing? I know it's discontinued and out of production. Is it really that spendy? Are they crap? What are they really trading for? What year(s) were they made?
I apologize if the mention of $$ brings me to the other forum, I'll just take whatever info/opinion about it anyone could offer.

Tascam better. Does not require Music CD-R, can use data discs. The professional market CD-R/CD-RW standalones tend to be better machines due to this. This was expensive new, and your Teac was aimed at consumer use. They were decent but hobbled by SCMS and the Music Discs. The unit sounded good.
