Someone locally is selling pair Technics SB-A38 is great condition they will do $30 this could be a steal what do think?? I have a set of Fisher DS-822 one sounds so so the other sounds a little muffled. These Technics would be like 40% to 60% upgrade over the Fisher.

I'd keep looking, these were probably from a rack system and not very good. Being in Houston, you should have a decent selection of vintage audio available to you.

Not that weight alone should be an indicator of sound quality.

But, 38 inches tall, and ~ 30lbs...................

You should be able to throw a rock(blindfolded) and hit a better speaker.

Houston CL is ripe with potentially good speaker deals. With a quick 2 minute browse i spotted a pair of JBL Northridge towers for 75 bucks for example.

Odd that they have different sized woofers. Speaker is a "3-way, 4 driver" system so one would assume the woofers are in parallel. Neither is a passive radiator since the cabinet is ported. I'm morbidly curious how they did the crossover.

If 30 bucks is what you have then it sounds like they will make you happy. I would agree with the other posters though that a few bucks more can get you a lot more speaker.

I know these Technics are not going sound as good a $300+ pair of Bose Altec Lansing B&W EV
Klipsch Or Polkaudio. These speaker should sound decent hey $30 is still a good deal.

Sensing a theme here... You can/should do way better for less than 30.00 by getting something else other than those speakers. Just cause technics made the SL-1200 doesnt mean all their turntables are quality units.. Same goes with speakers....

Still better than white van speakers.... That's not saying much, is it?
Funny thing, I'd buy them for $15 because there is always someone who wants some el cheapos to use in a garage system or to give to their teenage kid.

50V non-polarized caps in series with the + lead for the mid and tweet. I'm not joking, I've looked inside speakers like those from Technics and other brands. Let them woofs roll off on their own, low passes are for sissies.

That phase plug on the cone tweeter could fool you into thinking they are something, but they aren't anything. Cat coffins.

You passed on Sonys that were a better speaker for less money.

Probably just two different sized woofers wired like a matched pair. You know, so they will "pound hard".

otoh, buy these for the cabinets, re-inforce them, caulk all intersecting surfaces, rip out
these drivers, replace with OMG-ones from parts express and don't forget the crossover.

otoh of the otoh, if you don't have a chainsaw (Texas?) you probably don't have a screwdriver,
then if you listen to death/metal/death-metal/etc then only a LARGE JBL or stacked DV9s
with 1000w/channel will do.

you should have fun with things like this since it will not be your last.

who knows, the seller may need the money and your buying this means karma credit
and maybe - lo and behold, a quad of JBL L100 drops in on you for free. sell two
to fund a 500w/channel amp and

enjoy the music

For craptacular speakers, do the knuckle rap test. Knock the sides of the cabinet. If the cabinet makes a dull thud, the cabs are well braced which indicates some effort was put into construction. If the cabs sound like a hollow door, the will be lots of secondary resonance which mean muddy sound.

These will be a good upgrade over the Fisher I have now
OP has emphasized this. He is probably not wrong.

Hopefully he understands that we can only judge those Technics speakers based on their own merits. The only contrast we have is 30 dollars, and most of us have experience that says 30 bucks and a little motivation can produce better speakers.

If we had as much insight into the Fisher speakers that the OP is basing his perspective on, replies might have been a bit different.

I have a great pair of Genesis in my garage system for at least a decade...paid 8 bucks for em. Of course they needed refoaming and not everyone is up for that.
