707x or the AUD 11II are highly regarded suis.but i wonder what upper tier amps have people heard and kept . What are there experiences before finally settling for a famous sansui.

Personally I have heard a reasonable number of different Sansui's - but I am in the enviable(?) position of having, and (currently) being able to keep SIX different Sansui amplifiers.
They are all somewhat different, and I have my favourites, I often wonder if I would be able to pick them out in a double blind test.
Apart from the six I own, I have listened to a further 12 different Sansui amplifiers and receivers of many different designs, however this is a r-e-a-l-l-y puny total compared to some collectors.
So, to sum up - I would find it extremely hard to settle on just one.
They are all somewhat different, and I have my favourites, I often wonder if I would be able to pick them out in a double blind test.

@quadklipsh , you seem to focus on what's "better" and X vs Y, and is not that simple.
A lot of times is not better, just different, and speakers have a HUGE part on that aspect, not all amps have the same synergy (for lack of a better term), not to mention that people have different taste, hearing capabilities,bias, rooms, condition of the unit, etc. As you can see too many variables.
A a lot of enthusiasts just have different systems to enjoy, and don't feel the need settle, just plays whatever he feels like or whatever have on the room.
For me, the key is to learn what do you like and enjoy and proceed accordingly, opinions at the end are like belly buttons, everybody has one.

So, to sum up - I would find it extremely hard to settle on just one.
And in some cases, you keep something not because it was the best sounding amplifier, but because it also had some sentimental value. In my experience, I had Sansui AU-D11 (my profile picture in mint condition), G99X (Super Duper Clean Power), G-8700 (Monster Receiver - one of the best sounding I have had), alpha-607MR (powerful and refined alpha sound). Ultimately, I had far too many at the same time and decided to part with most of my Sansui gear, The ones left were the AU-D11 II and AU-7500 (the first one I restored by myself). Now I cannot say that the AU-7500 was better than my previous amps. I kept what made me happy. And they all play good enough to make me happy and enjoy the music!

Does anybody know if the power transformer of the D11 II can be used in the 707x and/or in the 707x Decade?
Or anybody know the detailed rail voltage of the secondary outlets of the power trans in 707x/707x Decade?
Maybe anybody changed a import amp from Japan to 230V and can give me some hints...

Looks like the AU-D707x is the same as the AU-G90x for which there is a service manual.

The D11 II seems to be more common than the AU-G90X, so it seems odd that High Fidelity reviewed the 90X instead of the D11 II in their Oct 84 issue, see link below to read it (just need to have some patience and keep scrolling down until you get to the article)
Does anyone know what the deal is with the Impedance selector switches- why some models have them and others dont? Does a D11 II really need this switch to drive 4 ohm speakers vs many other Sansui models that dont have it?
Ive read contrary info online, that despite having this selector function, its better to keep it at the 8 ohm setting, even if running 4 ohm speakers. Hard to say?... Perhaps not critical unless volume is cranked up. (See the last sentence of the magazine review !)
The other interesting thing to be aware of with the x balanced amps: they dont work with amp-speaker switchboxes due to their 'ground free' design.

The impedance switch for 8 ohms and for 4 ohms works by selecting the voltage of the positive and negative rails of the power amplifier stage. There is a thread somewhere in this forum that explains the working principle which may help you decide how to use it:

What does this do exactly? I brought home a nice pair of Ohm Walsh 4's (4 ohm) yesterday and was thinking of powering them up. I guess I need to make sure this switch is positioned correctly? If I power these speakers with my AU-717 or AU-D7 will it kill them? I don't listen at loud levels...
