Technics CD-4 (Quad 4) SS-2900D find - face restore?

Hi guys,

I came across this in my local classifieds and couldn't resist picking it up for $50 Aus. It's a Technics CD-4 system dating from 1972 purchased from the original owner.

Apparently these are very rare?

The speakers and timber work of the cabinets (all bar the missing strip on the amp cabinet bottom right) are in MINT condition. No real marks or scratches at all which is pretty amazing since it's 45 years old!

The turntable needs a new belt and I'm not sure about the cartridge but it looks ok and the motor spins like it should.

Otherwise the amp works as it should with lovely strong FM reception and all the meters and lights working as they should.

To get this lovely piece of history back as it should requires the face plate restored. It has unfortunately deteriorated with the silver surrounds missing and damaged due, what looks like, salt air corrosion. The markings are all perfect however.


I'm ordering a belt tonight. Does anybody know how or who can restore the face plate?

A service manual for this will be tricky. This range wasn't sold to my knowledge in the USA or Canada. Easier to find in Japan. It is nice, the turntable on it reminds me of CEC build, it likely is a CEC sourced turntable (very reliable, performs well, and simple to maintain).

I would ask to move this out of turntables and into general or Technics. You might get more responses on the restoration aspects. DIY maybe as well.

Turntables by themselves are not Quad. CEC did make turntables with tonearm wiring low capacitance for CD-4 Quad use and arms friendly to light tracking cartridges with Shibata styli fitted. Folks down under got a lot of nice Japanese gear in small numbers which often didn't get imported to the USA. Your system is an example of gear like this.
