Technics or Marantz

I am tempted to ask, do you know anyone in Edmonton? They seem to have some people reducing their collection.

No...

But I know there's another AK'er up there, KrisM. He said he could help me keep an eye out for TTs up there and I've already PM'd him.

Though I have to say there are more TTs being sold in Edmonton than in Calgary.

Yep, I had a friend stalking out Edmonton for me for some gear since they seem to be a lot cheaper than Manitoba, saw some real good pieces for extremely good price, one that sticks out was a LAB-400 with AT-13ex cartridge for $40. lol there is a rega P3 with RB300 on Edmonton, good price too.

Hmm a linear tracking TT ? I have very little knowledge on them and how they perform compared to a 'normal' TT. Can anyone shed some light on this? For $15 it seems 'buyable'.

Linear trackers, very briefly, totally eliminate tracking error by moving the arm and stylus across the record in a straight line, as opposed to an arc, keeping the stylus square in the groove throughout playback. It's impossible to say for sure, of course, but if it hadn't been for CDs coming along to upset things, linear trackers would probably be the norm today.

This particular Realistic was available in 1984 and 1985. You can see it here on page 24. In looking at it again I'm not so sure that it was a C.E.C. but maybe a Technics. The arm in the lid design was popular at Technics but I don't think C.E.C. ever used that.

I've never had a LAB-1500 but have had a couple of LAB-2200s (page #20) pass through here. They are really pretty darned nice. Put a good P-mount cartridge on them and they sound very good.

John

Hold out for a nice SL1500 very easy to set up and they can be tweaked.... Plus they sound nice

The SL1500 is fully manual. I would opt for at least a semi-automatic (auto return) to prevent unecessary stylus wear rubbing on the label. At some point, you will forget or be indisposed when the side runs out...

There a few more in Edmonton now, but that changes back and forth in my experience. And the deals change, too. A few of the tables being sold in Edmonton are by the same small group of people, and they are over-priced if you ask me. I don't blame them really, everybody tries to low-ball here.
To be honest the best deals I've found up here($20 AR-XA, $75 Sony PS-X70, $20 Technics SL-Q3, etc) were not from kijiji or CL, but by hitting the thrifts, and the "grittier" pawn shops. Then again, a couple of months ago I tipped a fellow AKer to a free Sony PS-X60 on Calgary kijiji. He missed out by a few minutes, but deals do show up.

Haha, no place is cheaper than here! I've seen some nice deals pass through Edmonton on kijiji and some took a long time to sell, but like everything it takes patients.

Btw, also check out ebay and set your distances to your postal code to see anything local for pick ups.

I think Saskatchewan has us both beat. :D
I was selling a decent table for $180(firm), and a guy from SK low-balled me through email to $90 and wanted me to ship it on my dime and had the gall to tell me to make sure that I didn't cheap out on packing it.
Seriously, I think the low-ballers are everywhere. I wonder if they have a forum like this one?

So is the SL-1200. That's not a negative for everyone. The SL-1500 is a pretty darned good turntable by all reports.

John

Not to mention no stylus should be rubbing against the label, with any table.

Ok, you win. I think the reason why they low call is probably due to the prices I've seen in SK, talk about inflation.

Yep, I got a PL-71 which is a manual and I don't mind it at all slightly more effort than a Semi-auto and maybe a bit more effort than a fully auto. In other words, as John has stated it's not really a big deal. Even the TOTL Sansui tables SR-838/SR-929 are manual. Speaking of SL-1X00 tables, they are very nice tables, I gave my mother a SL-1300 and I think it's a damn good table.

Looks a lot like my JVC L-E22B

Except I removed the plastic sheet covering the works.

I might have to take it back. I just searched SK for the heck of it, and there was a nice, and cheaply priced Marantz 6300, with the 45 adapter, manual and extra headhshell, east of Regina.

That's a pretty good price. If I knew how to pack and shipped turntables there is a restored AR XB in Winnipeg for $80, with an M91 cartridge and the realistic/shure 3x stylus on it.

Alright !

I found a place in Calgary that's selling TTs. They have 5 in stock and tomorrow is when they'll 'test' them.

I'll give them a call and ask for the model numbers and prices...then report back to AK :D

Good luck!

Is this a place that knows about turntables? Perhaps a score is in the making.:D
I know the guy that I got my AR-XA from was clueless. I got it for $30 less than the headshell alone goes for.

I also noticed a place on kijiji that sells tables and lps. It was located in a comic store.

Thanks guys but I called and they said they won't have TTs tested / cataloged until this coming Tuesday.

@KrisM I'm not too sure. I believe they're just a consignment store located in Calgary called AllSold (link).

I found a CEC ST520, with dust cover, selling for $25.

I did a quick search on AK and found that another member also has the same TT. Does this sound like a decent deal? :scratch2:

What is it, belt drive automatic?

Can you bring your own record and test it ?

If it is fully functional, go for it as a learning experience!:music:
