Technics Overhang Gauge

Couldn't agree more. When I was a turntable noob AK threads on cartridge setup used to terrify me; folks made it seem like defusing an atom bomb. Then I took a deep breath, used the overhang gauge, and was listening to a new cartridge 10 minutes later.

(That said, I don't touch the Clearaudio myself, that's the dealer's job :yes:)

Totally agree. I've been using the overhang gauge with various Technics turntables since the late 70s and have always achieved satisfactory (to my ears, at any rate) alignment. Along the way I've double checked a few installations with a protractor; which suggest further alignment. In every case, the suggest alignments resulted in inner grove distortion and higher than acceptable sibilance and I always returned to the overhang gauge alignment.:music:

I can't speak to other s-shaped tonearms, but then, I don't use anything but Technics.

Thanks Frank. Actually the DL-110 is on the top of my list. I'll check the Shure. Is the m97xe far from M447. Different in SQ and character? I've used m447 exclusively for the past years before getting a new turntable with different cart. I like it sounds but i'm now looking for a different character cart like the AT95e which is neutral and for me it sounds better. More details mid and high.. Hopefully the m97xe has these kind of characteristics. This is much cheaper than DL-110 and easy to find..

Hey i'm loving the ATLP120. I haven't done mods yet but I'm planning on getting rid the phono preamp and upgrading the rca cables. Do you still have yours? Right now, i'm using art dj pre for the phono amp then to my powered speakers. Sounds good for me! Hopefully I could get the amp to match the speaker i bought for an upgrade. I can't wait!

Just a warning - the overhang for the AT-LP120 USB is 53mm

That means that you should extend 1mm ahead of the edge of the overhang gauge

That said I have read that people use the Technics overhang as is with the AT-LP120

I'm planning on getting a new cart soon so i decided to get one. I have some questions. When i'm trying to align na tip of the styli to the gauge tip the styli is a bit misaligned in the center. Should i align the styli to the center? Doing this the cartridge is not centered on the headshell. It's kinda weird.

Apologies for the previous link - I just realized it doesn't take you to the info - here it is, from the Q&A section of the AT LP120 page

The effective length of the tonearm on the AT-LP120-USB Turntable is 230.5mm which puts the stylus overhang (the distance the stylus tip extends beyond the center of the spindle when the tonearm is directly over the spindle) at 16mm. I believe the Technics overhang gauge sets the stylus overhang at the spindle at 15mm. Extend the stylus tip 1mm beyond the end of the gauge and you should be good to go. To verify the overhang is correct, simply measure 16mm out from the center of the spindle on the side of the spindle opposite the tonearm pivot when the tonearm is positioned directly over the spindle. The styus tip should be at the 16mm mark.

It depends on the type of character of sound you prefer. If you prefer things on the warmer side of neutral, go with the Shure. If you prefer a brighter, more detailed presentation, go with the Denon.
 
Thanks V. My overhang for ATLP was short to 52mm before and it sounded fine but then i used this gauge the details are better. I made sure the stylus tip is atleast 52mm or more. I will try to do 53mm next time i tweak the turntable but so far i'm happy with the 52mm overhang :). How was yours?

Thanks! My setup would be a NAD 326bee and Monitor Audio BX2 soon. I just yet to get the amp. So, if the Shure is on warmer side of neautral would that be a good match up with the nad and bx2? What i know is that the 326bee is warm and bx2 is a bit clinical. It sounds like the dl110 would be good as well.

For me, the result was a great reduction in surface noise... it sounded a like a bit much, the overhang adjustment produced a significant reduction... All this with a Shure M97xe.

I double checked on the AT95e that came with the table, yup, 53mm, straight in the headshell

A great table/cart combo to start with... sounds nice and warm... don't use the USB or internal phono... add your own, and you'll be upgrade ready, specially if you go the vintage Technics route, since you can reuse headshells and the cart is also a good match for those...
