Technics SA-700 - LEDs don't work except Safety

When I power on this SA-700 the green safety light comes on and the relay clicks, as expected. I have good sound coming through both channels (after 3 rounds of cleaning/deoxit).

The Power Level LEDs, Program LEDs, and FM Stereo LEDs do not light up at all. Toggling the Power Display button has no effect. There is no movement in the Signal and FM tuning gauges, nor do I get any sound when AM/FM input is selected.

What are my next steps to trouble shoot the LEDs and the radio not pulling a signal? I do have a multimeter but I don't really know how to use it lol!

Hello. First thing to check is if the boards in question are receiving power.

With a schematic, you need to find the voltage rails feeding the tuner and the meter boards, and check the voltage is present at the boards.

With your DMM set to measure DC volts, black probe to the chassis, and red probe to the point you want to test.

IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE A MULTIMETER, I THINK IT'S NOT A GOOD IDEA TO BE POKING INSIDE A LIVE UNIT, DANGEROUS VOLTAGES ARE IN THERE, YOU COULD BE ELECTROCUTED.

Perhaps you could practice a bit with some battery powered device first. Really, electricity is not a joke, many people don't have a second chance after a mistake.

You need schematics. It may be that the LED's in question are powered by a common source. there are several places on-line to find schematics.

But it sounds like you don't have much electronics troubleshooting experience.
The potential to hurt yourself is there but I think it is more likely that you will do more damage to the unit.

Waaayyy back when, my first "real" stereo was supposed to be a SA700. I had ordered a brand new one from a shop that was willing to match a print-ad price. Turns out he couldn't get a SA700 but was able to get a SA800 at a slightly higher price.
