Technics SL-1900 not lifting.

A new to me SL-1900 in very good shape all except for the lift does not work at all. The lever will not effect the lift. You can adjust the screw and make it go up and down. But will stay in the position never moving. The SM is of little help.

Any thoughts?

Have to take it apart and add new silicone fluid most likely, 500K.

John, there was a thread around here once about the gummed up cam under the tonearm on the 1900/1950 and I believe it was you that had some pretty good pics of the problem area. Did you delete those pics?

I think most of the pictures I had were deleted to make room for new stuff.

I can look to see if i can find them on my PC.

no Luck finding the pictures so far, still looking. The arm Assembly lifts off and there is a clip holding down a spring on the cueing shaft if I remember right.

Take pictures as you go and don't loose them..LOL.:D

If you could find and post pics, it would be appreciated greatly. I have a 1900 with the exact same issue. Stuck in the up position, lever non moving. I can push the rest down with my finger but it comes back up after pressure removed?

I lifted (pun intended) this pic from vinylengine and it already has the nifty red arrows.

I've worked on a couple of these and that black (it may be white) cam causes most of the cueing problems on the SL-1900/1950. It pivots on a brass sleeved pin and the brass reacts with the grease and becomes a green sticky mess. Clean it and then use white lithium or silicone grease. Of coarse, check the cueing lift pin also. If it's sticky, clean and replace the silicone oil (300k or 500k).

To get to those parts you'll have to remove the tonearm assembly. After separating the top of the plinth from the bottom cover there will be six screws holding the tonearm, three from the bottom and three from the top. With the screws removed, carefully lift and turn the tonearm over being careful with the wires. Also keep track of the position of the linkage involved, as John said, take pictures.

Picture of stuck cam..the white one, some WD-40 took care of it if I remember right.

Well after some time finally took a look under the hood. Yes it was the cam frozen and it looked different from the one in picture. Now working all but now waiting for the 300K to lube the shaft over night. Dropping a little to fast for me.

Thanks for all the help.

It a real royal Big PITA to get to the cam I will tell you! If the WD-40 works I can see the benefits. But I was curious and kept going in while drinking a few more cold ones. Looks like it will now sing once again.

Yeah, that works great, don't it?! Last time I tried that what had started out as probably an oil change ended up, after about a case of Schaeffer--and my buddy's convincing me it would be "easy," with the whole head tore off my '74 260Z. Waayyyy back when I was young, stupid, and cheap (Schaeffer!!). :stupid:

Btw, I just picked up an SL-1900, and the tonearm lifter is stuck in the up position too. I can depress it with my finger, but it springs back up. I suppose I may have to get curious enough to try and fix it--sans the Schaeffers, of course!

Get you a box and a towel, remove the platter and top off the table. Forgot lock down the arm good. Flip it over into the box covered with a towel. Remove the screws remembering where they came from . Carefully remove the top cover. then loosen the three arm screws and gently move the arm to the side. Then you can spray some WD-40 under the white plastic piece after loosing it up of course.

But you will need to re apply 300K fluid to the lift because the WD-40 will change the properties of associated components.

I'm not sure if I have any WD40 in the house right now. Which one of these from Tower would I use if I were to go with the silicone? Thanks.

None really, If you decide to go in and look just loosen up the screw on the white plastic piece and work it back and forth to free it up and see if that helps.

I have bin using 300K lube on the tube and it seems to work out OK.

I haven't had mine opened up yet. But just for clarification's sake, are you talking about the black plastic cams identified in the pic above? Thanks.
