Technics SP-15

As typical of Japanese audio equipment the fit and finish is mfg to very close tolrences and may of been too good for the start/stop switch that would in the real world be put to the test with coffee, soft drinks and who knows what else poured on it and seeping down inside. Can't say for certain but there's a good chance the switch was jammed against the pad for many years as it sat in a spare equipment store room at the radio station. I also emailed Kevin/KAB to see if he had any advice on this since the 1200Mk2 and the three SPs (10/15/25) appear to share the same design start/stop. If anyone can get it 100% it will be Paul with much appreciated assistance from our fellow AK members. It's quite clean and has only a couple nicks/scratches that are barely visable and it will look very presentable. I have a Platter Matter mat that is a perfect fit and will probably replace the very worn original mat. I listened again today with a different preamp/amp and it's sounding much better, the Stanton 681SE cartridge on the ATP12T tonearm may have been NOS with no hours and not broken in. Tomorrow if all goes well I'll swap tghe SP15 into my other SP-25 plinth with the EPA-A250 tonearm and a EPC-205CMk3 cartridge and see what results I get.
 
And if you think the DJ spilling Pepsi on this switch is bad, you haven't seen the aftereffects of it spilled down the studio console (some of them are Kia Rio prices or worse). My only thing I ask of a DJ, come clean and tell us the liquid was spilled and power down the board. And call one of us in Engineering. Sometimes, if quick enough we can save the board, at worst might be more easily repairable.
 
Kent I worked for a few years in a 911 communications center and more than a few times a dispatcher would be eating/drinking at their dispatch console and tip over food/drink into the console. I was quick to call/page the communications engineering group to come to the rescue before it got real nasty and the console went down. The offenders favorite ingredients were Pepsi, Coke, Dr Pepper, coffee, tea, chinese food, pizza.

note the three solder joints close together in a triangle arrangement.... THOSE are the three that falter. This is the "after" photo (but before final cleaning of flux). The "Before" were not as uniform, and were dull, flat gray.

I'd be very tempted to take a detour coming up thru Chattanooga where we cut off 75 to 24 heading towards Nashville and points north in a few weeks on our spring migration:music: and invite myself in. :D

I tried chasing a SP15 recently on the auction site which looked to be in cherry condition with an AT arm and a B3 (?) Technics base. It went for a pretty rich price.
 
I'd like to hear some feedback re if I'm on the right trail. Looks like Technics used a different design heavy duty micro switch for the SL-1200Mk2. I'm looking for photos of the 1200 33/45 micro switches which could possibly be the same as those used in the SP-15. Of all the switches the start/stop had to get the heaviest use.

On a note related to to the SP series tables. I used the grounding post on one of my 25's yesterday. I had been getting an extremely low level hum just on the Grace 707/ADC XLM MKII which is mounted closest to the transformer on my temp plinth. That arm seems more sensitive than my others which didn't have any noise at all (the other two have LOMC). Don't know if its just that arm/cart (maybe it's wiring) or the location of it relative to the trannie.

Any Ak'ers have a trusted contact in Chicago? I'd grab that table in a heartbeat if I wasn't down in FL right now. I sent a message to the fellow.

Hi,

I bought two SP-15's a while ago. They played OK, one is have the 200 RPM issue that I will try to solve as instructed above.

Both turntables had sticked up/non-moving start/stop buttons. I replaced them with SL 1200 ones, which works fine. However, they have fader start RCA plug installed, which connects to the start/stop switch. What happens is that when the start/stop button releases, the turntables stop inmediately.
This seems a bit logcal, since fader start switches are 'Always on'. So there must have been some sort of modification that enables that.

Anyone knows what that is?
