Necrothread revival - but had to share my gratitude. I just got around to a near pristine SP-15 I've had for several years - bought for next to nothing because it had a speed control problem. This morning I started it up noting that the start stop switch was acting a little funky and about a half hour later it was off to the races. I resoldered each of the pads and I have one fixed turntable! Even the switches now work as expected! The only downside is that now I have to buy a tonearm and build a plinth...
For anyone who wants to do the fix, removing the stator is simple:
Remove the platter
Remove the three screw holding the stator to the base (mine had arrows point to the correct screws)
Wiggle the stator our and pull off the connector.
