A friend of mine who's got a brother with way too much hi-fi gear mentioned that this brother might like to unload a pair of these for pretty cheap... maybe just a couple hundred dollars. I'm wondering if I should consider these things?
My gear situation is this: I'm using a Marantz 2270 receiver to power two pairs of speakers in two different rooms. In a somewhat large living room/dining room space (though it really only needs to really fill up half of this space) I've got a set of Jamo c103 speakers and then in a bedroom I have a set of Elec Debut 6.2 speakers. I prefer the quality of sound from the Jamos (unsurprising as these speakers go for 5x the Elacs) but the one issue that I have is that those speakers are just a tad inefficient and seem to want more than the 70 watts of the Marantz to go really loud (not as loud as the cheap and beat 35 y/o Mirage speakers that I had before). Since I can't fathom getting rid of the Marantz, I thought of running it as a preamp with some kind of more powerful power amp, but I figure that if I got some really efficient speakers then I might be able to get the volume that way rather than by applying more power to the Jamos. Those Tekton Mini Lore Monitors are 95 db efficiency so I figure they might do the trick...
If I go this route, I could fund much of the purchase price of the Tektons by selling the Elacs and then I'd play musical chairs with the speakers and move the Jamos that are into the big room into the bedroom. I don’t really need the higher volume in the bedroom space as I don’t listen as loud there and since the space is so much smaller things get louder without having to turn up as much. The Elacs that I currently have in that room are actually 1 db less efficient than the Jamo speakers anyway (and the Jamo speakers do sound a bit louder in the larger space).
I wonder though what folks' experience with these Tektons are and how they would describe the quality of the sound? Besides being more efficient, how do they compare sonically with the Jamos and the Elacs I have? I'm assuming that they will have more punch due to their high efficiency rating and the fact that they're rated to work with up to 200 watts. The thing is though that I care about far more than just how well these things will crank up. I really like the tight bass, the transparency on the high end and the incredible imaging that the Jamos do... not to mention the fact that they sound great off-center (I can be sitting way off to one side of the room and still get a very nice stereo image). What might I be giving up or gaining with these Tektons vs the Jamos?
I should add here that I don't really feel like I'm suffering with the gear that I currently have and could proably live with the limation of not having the right combination of gear to really rock the house as that’s only something that I do maybe 5% of the time. It’s nice to be able to do that when the mood strikes but I generally listen to music at much lower levels and the Jamos (and the Elacs) both work very well up to even moderately (but not REALLY) loud. Still, if an affordable set of new speakers will improve things just a bit for me, I might just be inspired to buy them…
