When I was young I was fascinated with VR, thought it would have been cool to work for them. I never did own any of their products until about 5 years ago.
I just moved and as part of the move I found brochures of stuff I owned in the 80s plus this VR catalog

I have read so much wrong info about them so I thought I would share pics of the catalog

Haha, I had their most powerful integrated amp back then. Bought I from the Federated Group in SoCal. Gave it to a friend that needed a amp for DJ duty. Wish I kept now.
 
I have that VA-1450 power amp. But I blew it's outputs at a loud party around 1996. Still haven't gotten around to fixin' it. :whip:
 
Not sure about other units, but the separates (tuners, integrated and basic amp) were made by Rotel.

That's interesting. My VA-1450 looks almost identical to my two NAD power amps. Same Army-ish green and all.
 
My VRX-3500 receiver, purchased new in 1987 at the time we bought our first home, is still in active use at my son's house powering his basement setup. Apart from one repair after a weird power surge, it has never had an issue. At that time, I also bought an Onkyo DX-1400 CD deck, which has never had an issue and which I still use in one of my setups. I remember the minimalist styling of the VR line appealed to me. I vaguely knew of NAD at the time, came to appreciate them more later.

My vr-5000 still sits, collecting cat hair & dust. It was one of my loaners. ( they go out working, come back croaked. I no longer loan ANYTHING out). 1 channel inop, yer not alone, man!

I remember Federated and their spokesman, "Fred Rated", who I think was Shiloh Stevens.
 
I've run across a few thrift store units over the years but they were entry-level at best and I them left for other collectors. The boombox seems to have been semi-popular and turns up more often then other equipment. It looks like it's a copy of the JVC PC-11 but I'd have to go side-to-side to confirm, I pretty sure I have a JVC around here somewhere, now I just have to get a VR.

Any chance of scanning the brochure, it's very rare and I'm sure the internet would appreciate it!
 
I recently setup a two channel stereo system in my girlfriends place.

Its a Vector Research vrx - 7100, a Sony CD player an a couple of JBL bookshelf speakers.

It sounds great…we’re trying to hook it up to her Alexa, but the 3.5 mm connector was not fitting.

Still great sound…she likey.

The build quality of any of the VR stuff I’ve had apart is waaaaay better than NAD. Solid units, no plastic, no shortcuts. A shame it never caught on.
 
Nice! I've got a VRX-9100 and a multidisc CD player. Both nice pieces. I'd love to get that boombox!

Love the VR5000. Brother bought one for my sister when they were new. Always liked it and was happy when I received a broken one some years ago. I suspect there's now a leaky capacitor in the preamp and so I picked up a second unit to more completely go through the unit.

Hi all. I have a Vector Research VR-5000 receiver with a dead power amplifier. Voltage rails are fine (+/- 40 volts), signal is fine up to the input stage. The final driver/output transistors test okay. What is odd is that I've found that both channels have open 120 ohm resistors. These are...
