The best Mac to use with....

JBL S2600 speakers. These are horn loaded speakers. I was thinking about a Mcintosh MA-6900. Has anyone spent time with these speakers with Mac running them? They are rated to 400 watts. I really do not want to venture into tubes at this stage-I want some good SS power to drive them. They are 6 ohm rated speakers. The Lansing site has some info on them. They are kinda' rare in the US but I really like them.

At this moment I am using a Onkyo M-588F amp with the matching P-388F pre amp. It sounds great but I really would like to try out Mcintosh.

Thoughts?

Speaker wattage rating is really not a good indicator of how much power is needed to achieve decent volume in a given space, there are too many variables that need to be considered.
To give you an example my JBL 4350’s are rated at 600 watts, but they become dangerously loud with only 20W per channel in a 6000 cu ft room.

What is the feeling toward the MA-6900? Is it a good intergrated? I kinda' like the idea of having a loudness feature on demand. I have lost a little high freq. hearing and I think that would be helpful at lower voulumes.

That Onkyo is a decent looking amp @ 200wpc.

But you're right, it's not McIntosh :)

Since you have an acclaimed preamp

you could just buy a McIntosh amp and upgrade the preamp later. That would let you compare both amps with the Onkyo pre, then later both amp's with a Mac pre and let us know your observations. It also gives you the option of going ht down the road.

MC252 or MC402 as far as current models.

Cheers,
Steve

I agree. My speakers have a sticker on them saying 1,200 watts.... yet with 1 watt they'll play 109 db's....

Do the math

I take back the 400 watt rating. Did not mean anything by it. Please do not read anything into that part-it was only a part of the info given.

Just looking for some advice for these particular speakers. That is all.

Thanks for the feedback. The Onkyo is a good amp. I really like the looks of the defeatable meter lights.

I thought I would ask around concerning Mcintosh. However I have a Friend who bought a Mac mc-402 & had a Mac tube pre ( c-320?) with brand new B & W 803D speakers. Turns out he likes the sound from my speakers better.
Perhaps it was because he was an avid horn speaker guy for 20 years and he switched to the B & W's?

Do the people who have the MA-6900: Do you use the loudness feature on this amp much? Do you like the amp or do you find yourself wanting more power?
Thanks.

I had a 6900 for two years.....plenty of power!

Loundness button? No Way! No need!

Horn loaded speakers? Think tubes or perhaps SS separates (the separates make it easier to move up the food chain....)
