The continuing distortion of the term "vintage"

Right on!

Mid 70's speakers are not vintage? What planet are you from?

Those speakers were part of a bookshelf stereo system from around 1975. I know because a friend of mine had one. They sound like crap, but its vintage.

Yes you're right of course, from the 70's they are aptly named " Vintage Crap "as all those prelude to the newer micro systems from the 80's and newer also as opposed to good sounding one:thmbsp:s that are just " Vintage "!

Bouxy, you be crazee! Vintage has nothing to do with quality. NOTHING. It basically means out-of-date. Sports car enthusiasts used to laugh at Karmann Ghias (ever hear the term "poor man's Porsche), but prime examples of Ghias can bring over $30,000 on the market today.

Vintage, shminatge, are you all dillusional or what?Emerson and a few other brands are not Vintage in any sense/meaning of the word no matter how old they are!

Except in the actual meaning of the word from Webster's excluding definitions 1-4 which deal specifically with wine or grapes and definition 7, which seems to be the one with which you are familiar.
5. the class of dated or old fashioned objects eg a car of 1917 vintage.
6. of or pertaining to a vintage.
7. being or having the best of its kind.
8. dated or old fashioned but often of continuing interest.

Different interpretation of the word "Vintage"

1: Quality

2: Of the same year, ie...wine

3: 20 years or more, but not over 50

4: Sometime applied to clothes

5: Applied to furniture

6: Of a certain design

7: Guitars makers of bygone era

8: Audio equipment

9: My favorite,
The correct usage of the word vintage must be used with a year.

So pick the one you like.:thmbsp:

.....I consider a piece of audio equipment vintage when that particular model is no longer being produced.....

To me, anything over 15 -20 years old can be tagged vintage and it wouldn't bother me. As everyone else is saying, doesn't mean it's of particular quality. Some things become collectable for different reasons too; some even for being extremely lame and cheesy.
Technically I guess the term is misused, but it's misuse seems widely accepted in current pop culture and the official definition is probably overdue for an update.
Anyone buyin' that?

You don' get out much do you? Seems any more anything old is way over hyped and priced... I think once again, we know who to thank.. .e-bay... and of recent, Etsy....

I'm starting to think that the vast majority of vintage audio is over hyped and over priced for what you get in return. Certainly not all of it, but a great deal of it. In my opinion.
