The death of Big Red Football

cableguy

In Twang We Trust
I have been a Cornhusker fan since I was 5 years old. I have enjoyed Husker Foootball for nearly my entire life.....There have been some great years as well as some lean years, but nothing like this...:sigh:
Today I witnessed the complete demise/meltdown of a once great program......Sucks big time, I feel terrible for the young men on the team as well as the state of Nebraska.
On the other hand....Missouri & Kansas fans are having excellent seasons and have teams that they can and should have great pride in. My best wishes to both squads the rest of the season, you are both playing very, very good football.....
(Feel free to flame away if you choose, there isn't a whole lot you can say that I won't agree with at this point....)

I remember a few years ago Penn State put a severe beating on Nebraska...being a Penn State fan I was pleased. I'm not sure how long ago or what the score was, but I remember talking with my buddy Jimmy while watching and saying, "Damn, I've never seen Nebraska Football look so meek!" In my recollection they were always good, but I feel sorry for once proud fans of Big Red.

Lean years are hard to take...I know what being die hard feels like when your team sucks. I was born in a Western Pennsylvania town a few years before the Steeler's glory years and I dropped from the womb and straight into a die hard 'Black and Gold' family! After the glory years I remember them passing on Marino and taking Mark Malone and the 80's decline was in full effect! Even though they didn't outright suck, they weren't up to Pittsburgh Steeler Football! It was hard to watch some weeks. Times have gotten better though.

As with most good college football programs or pro franchises they always come back, so chin up Big Red Fan, good times around the corner soon.

The lean years won't last Bill, that's when legends are built; and the hard years are what makes us fans appreciate the fat & sassy times. There'll be many good seasons of Husker football yet, hang in there Big Red!

fotno beat me to it. It's the tough seasons that make the good ones so sweet.

Please remember what it feels like to be on the wrong side of these scores, and be gracious when things get better - and they will. It's the obnoxious fans and players that cause people to take great pleasure when a once-proud, but "in your face", program struggles. Whatever happened to sportsmanship? Is it just me, or does it seem like there are way too few good winners any more?

Hey, being a lifetime PennStater, I've lived with the ups and downs too. But we never had to deal with coaching changes. I used to respect Nebraska back in the old days of Tom Osbourne, but since I'm also a Raider's fan I lived thru a year of Callahan and I have zero regrets that he's gone from Oakland. Have the boosters can him, write off this season as "rebuilding", and do a good coaching search.

Go PennState!!!

By far the majority of college athletes are law abiding, good students, have a good work ethic, and are a credit to society.

As a life long Buff's fan you will get no sympathy here. But if it makes you feel better my team sux too.

As a lifelong Oregon Duck fan I can sympathize. If we aren't the kings of roller coaster football through the years I don't know who is. Besides look at what the Beavers did this weekend. It can happen to anyone.

Enlighten me, what tax dollars supports college sports? Am pretty sure it's all gate receipts and advertising. All the major college programs I know of are completely self supporting, and actually pay for many of the other minor sports programs that would never exist otherwise. PennState's football program funds the entire athletic department, including all the feel-good-student-athelete stuff. College sports a sham? Sorry, I don't see it.

No doubt college sports has suffered from the same excesses as most of society. It's certainly not pure anymore. In football the college holiday bowl games used to be played for pride and celebration. I used to remember watching the Rose Bowl Parade as a kid and was just as excited when the Rose Bowl was finally played. Now, just get to the game, some stations don't even carry the Parade. Now there's so much BCS posturing and money invovled it's insane. But that's caused by society, not by the sport.

No one's going to deny that sport (professional, amateur, and even recreational) is not what it used to be. It's sad that young athletes are often not the sterling examples that we might wish they would be; but who is?

What hasn't been mentioned, is that the monies brought into a university by a winning sports franchise (namely the product rights that are owned by the entire school not just the sports department) can mean millions of dollars each year. Money that allows the university to rein in tuition, build new buildings and facilities, attract more students, and physically expand so that a larger student body can attend.

As an aside (but on the off-topic here)... I personally don't spend a great deal of my time watching other people play sports; but I certainly don't condemn those who do. It seems to me anytime we watch a movie, listen to recorded music, read a book, or absorb any kind of externally generated entertainment, we are in effect, living vicariously. As much as I enjoy playing my guitar, I would hate to think that every time I wanted listen to a song, I'd have to sing it myself!

Yeah, I did.

No major sports program at a university in the USA breaks even. Latest, in-depth study was in 2005, covering graduation rates, costs, etc. The one thing that a winning sports program does is take the pressure off the state congresses and allow them to give more funding to the school in question.
Link or citation?

I can't tell from your statement if that additional state funding to the schools with winning sports programs is earmarked strictly for sports, some mix, or strictly for education. Surely it varies from state to state; you imply, but don't actually state, that overall it's largely for sports.

If a winning sports program helps bring more (of even my) tax money to academics in higher education, I'm for that (within reason - no 99/1 split in favor of sports, say). State funding is why state schools are cheaper to attend than private ones and a lot of them are darned good in various academic fields. If a winning football team opens the purse strings for academics, I don't necessarily have a problem with that.

Small private Division-III college tuitions have been climbing rapidly (no sports scholarships, school-sponsored but small-potatoes Varsity teams - intermural in your sense, I think - plus club and intramural sports and good athletic facilities available to all students). Their tuition and fee increases are certainly not less than our big-time "big-sports" state universities - probably more. I'm familiar with this... :tears:

Notice I didn't mention anything good about the Buffs:butt1::bigok:
At least you have a Good coach and a future. Great win over Oklahoma that was pretty damm cool. Good luck the rest of the season.

I was in Portland for 5 years in the 80/90's, so I am a closet Ducks and Beavers fan. Oregon looks strong right now...:thmbsp:

Cableguy I feel your pain. I am a long time Dolphins fan.
Thanks man....but, how about them Bulls...:thmbsp:

You know what the "N" on their helmet stands for?

Knowledge.

Nebraska has Graduated the highest number of Academic All American football players in D1 ever.... so you are correct sir:D

I'm sorry, Cableguy, but I have absolutely NO sympathy for you whatsoever, and here's why.

When I was a sophmore in high school in 1965 (central California), I had a history class first period. Our teacher was fresh out of college, and unfortunately for us, from the University of Nebraska.:boring:

The only thing worse than having a history class first period, was to have a teacher who went ON and ON and ON and ON and ON about how friggin' great Nebraska was in whatever sport was currently being played, especially when they beat a California team!!:thumbsdn: (Nebraska was pretty good back then).

So, for no other reason than the memories that Nebraska incites pertaining to that teacher, I feel no pain at their current demise.:D:D:D
