Actually, in the AR2 there was a molded plastic piece that contained the two 5" drivers as below (not my pics):

These "cans" were stuffed with fiberglass and the drivers themselves were also "damped" with fiberglass wedges inserted in the backside between the basket and cone (again, not my pics):

Since these drivers were completely sealed off from the main cabinet, they never received ANY back-pressure from the woofers. I'm pretty sure the added damping had nothing to do with that and was more of a frequency response modification.
