Three Shows in under 40 hours - Another sleepless weekend.


Wake up early, hit airport early saturday morning, from O.C. -> San Jose airport, with hopes of connecting with friends for a ride to the Frost Ampitheater.


Hook up with friends, accomplished. We arrive at the legendary Frost Ampitheater.

Some back trackin,....

Prior to this concert run, there was rumor of an FM broadcast from the college campus at Stanford. So, I came prepared with a newly purchased FM tuner by Sony, a Walkman; my other portable FM tuner was a Realistic, from the 08-87 Mtn Aire Fest., from the Angels Camp recordings. I felt that the Realistic tuner, a true analog dial tune, had channel drift ism's, based on the drift experienced at Angels Camp. So, I bought this new-fangled Sony Walkman FM tuner, as it had a step-locked "digital" tuner, that locked to each .1 step in the radio, and lockable presets, rather than landing on some looser, wandering tuning stages with the analog tuner; the Sony tuner was not truly digital, just digitally-stepped tuning. 



We still experienced some channel drift, or, just plain FM isms; not bad, but not perfect either. But, what they represent is a massive part of the experience, as there were tons of DeadHeads in the Eucalyptus tree stands outside of, and around the venue, who were there, and, just intending on partying to the concert via this broadcast.

And the recordings carry a lot of heft, sonically speaking.


Upon arrival to pick me up at the airport, our friend, and host, Leigh McK., announced that he had purchased tickets to go see David Lindley, and El Rayo-X in Santa Cruz, at the Catalyst Theater, this show was after the Dead 04-30, day one. 

Leigh and I are rabid Lindley heads.



While fun, I knew this trip was going to be an all-dayer, and, an all-nighter, literally. And, quite correctly, the Mr. Dave set started near midnight on saturday night, 04-30

So, I decided early on, that there was no way that I was going to get through this day with the Dead, if I went up front to record, and, cover a mic stand, and, battle the crowd. So, I decided to just go with the FM broadcast recordings for this run of concerts. My compatriots in this day, they joined in, and we laid around on the lawn, inside the Frost, at the back of the OTS, and we were plugged into the FM tuner. We had the tuner on its own small mic stand, strapped to the top, with the headphone jack serving as line-out, and the cable acting as an antennae.


Reality,.. I was in the Bay area for probably 36 hours, and, attended and recorded three show in those two days.


Sleep?

Not on the 30th; no way. I might have napped on the lawn, in the Frost, on sunday, 05-01 Then, show over, dropped at airport all nasty and stinky, and home I flew on the last flight into OC airport that evening, like 10:30pm, and a taxi ride home.

I looked at LMA, and no FM's were present. So, I dug the tapes out, and, ran them through the digishizzer thingie.

I was actually looking for the Lindley recording, which I thought was from Oct. 87, during the GD Shoreline run. But, it was not that run. It was from the Frost '88 run that we also did the LIndley gig. So, finding the Lindley, caused me to look for the Dead, where I found these tapes, as of yet, not transferred to digital.

I guess its a good thing to find uncirculated GD recordings in buried boxes under the storage bed?

Yep, I'm a fan. I think the guy is utterly amazing. 
El Rayo-X was a rather short-lived variation on the theme of Mr. Dave. It was definitely the hard-rockin' loud version.

They were a band from around 1986->1990

I was fortunate to see them at least a half dozen times. I totally dig his variation on reggae, and, how he delivers a solid Dub. But it is not limited to his reggae. His style also consists of so many world beat styles, and, is played on those same native world stringed instruments, but, with many twists away from traditional.
Example: 5-string Banjo played with a cello bow, and played like a cello on his knee, to imitate bag pipes.

This might sound annoying, but it is totally amazing to see.

And just when you think you've nailed down his style, he pulls out something else.


This band, they played in hard-drinking, hard-partying bars, with rowdy audiences.
Don't expect chamber music audience ethics/ettiquette.
This energy drove Mr. Dave. And, his theme in this, his personality, was, Mr. Dave for President (because I'm scared shitless of G. Bush).


So, it was a crazy whirlwind adventure.

Hot? 106º on the field, and Jerry was melting in the sun.
We arrived early, as these were general admission shows. So, this meant getting in line as the main parking lot gates opened, and, then, hanging out on black asphalt, in line, all day l o n g,... And it was a record hot weekend, with temps quickly soaring to 106º while we sat in the line, and then, onto this massive soccer field complex.
We grabbed our gear, and, we literally ran to the best of spots, in Front of the Board (in front of the mixing console), Dead Fackin' Center , or, FOB-DFC
This is turf that was very desired, and very hard fought for. it was literally a battle ground up there.
We had a huge gathering of taper friends, and, friendly to the cause friends around us. We created a large diameter circle around us of friendlies, that was impenetrable; You want to go to the back? nope, you have to go around us, not through us. And they were literally, strongly encouraged to keep moving wide around us by truly friendly persuasion. Nope, you gotta keep moving around us,....
This left us with at least a sane place to break out extremely spendy gear, and not worry about it being trounced under foot.
Back to the friends around us, and the heat,...
I knew it was going to cook us, sure as day. So, I took a white bed sheet, and cut a hole in the center, just large enough to fit my head through it. This was to create a white poncho for hiding from thee sun, while sitting on asphalt. It worked well, and, ultimately, it was used when a friend on our inner circle succumbed to the heat, and, just passed out, dropping straight down, as that was the only way to go, given the packed house. We put her under the sheet, and poured water onto it, to try to cool her down. She recovered, and didn't need further medical help.
Then, the sun took to cooking the microphones, and caused one of them to drop its output, and, ultimately, was probably responsible for killing the onboard preamp in the mic body.

At their peak right here IMHO. I saw the June 90 shows at Cal Expo and they were bonkers. So much energy. Eugene too for that matter. 1990 was a good year all around.

I too was at Cal Expo, but, those were my last shows. I'd had it with the Touch of Gray influence, and over-abundance of play time. It wasn't a planned thing; it just sort of drifted away, and then it was over. For me, it ended there. Jerry passed, and my interest in the remnants just wasn't there.
I'd been going to shows since the early 70's, and, it was time.

I recorded the GD for a number of years, from 1982 -> 1990.

My recordings of the GD were very experimental (a lot of time dedicated to developing HRTF stereo; a quasi-binaural technique that plays nicely with speakers); and, quite often, they were not all that great,.. sometimes they turned out pretty nice.

Overall, there are lots of GD tapes out there. These are mine.

I was part of what was referred to as the FOB Crew, or, Front of soundBoard. The soundboard (sbd) is the main mixing console for the house PA array.

Around 1984, the GD started an official taping section for the fans who recorded. Some of us started at a time when there was no such thing. We had always gravitated towards where the mix was focused, which was at the SBD. This didn't change for a small crew of us. It was tolerated, grandfathered, so to speak. The sound man always sought copies.

These tapes are from FOB-DFC (dead f'n center).

All six of the Forum shows, Feb1989 and Dec1989, were from the exact same spot. That spot was marked with gaffers tape on the floor, and we kept that spot for both runs.
In all 6 of those shows, I stood cover over a mic stand that had two other pairs of mics in stereo configuration, and my own head worn quasi-binaural technique, with the mic stand being able to be hoisted an additional foot overhead, because of my height.
There were GD security (Hells Angels) up in the overhead light rack and PA rack, with flashlights, looking down into the area where we were recording from, looking to bust us. But, even if they spotted us, it was so bloody crowded, that they'd have been in a world of hassles getting to us.
For a long time, these were the only available versions at LMA.

Mike wore the mics hrtf, and Brian ran the decks. This was Brian's first live recording effort.
We had some brickwalling from the loudness of the music, and it wasn't recognized until after the concert

These were exceedingly loud concerts. So loud that our clothes were pinned to us for all 3 nights
of the shows. We experienced brickwalling to a degree, and it is present in the first set of the show,
as well as the second set, but not as apparent.
It was so loud that even after realizing that we were brickwalling the hrtf rig,
and changing to the oade/schoeps ortf rig that was also present, even the oade/schoeps rig experienced
some brickwalling, as can be heard. None of it is overbearing. Perhaps it might be more palettable in
knowing that it could not be avoided in this instance, even by the best of rigs. It was just an incredibly
loud series of concerts.

All three nights of this run are from the exact same spot, as marked by a piece of gaffers tape on the
vinyl floor covering. The second run of shows later in this year were also from this same spot. So all 6
shows of the '89 Dead Forum runs are from the same spot, the Impact Zone (fob/dfc)
There were dead crew members in the light rack looking for, pointing out, and shutting down FOB tapers
during this run of shows.

The Forum was a big, mostly round'ish hall. It was not a bad sounding hall, though, especially not with the GD sound system.
The roundness of the hall reduced a lot of revereberant information; there were not any corners in there,
I saw a lot of concerts in the Forum, dating back into the early-mid 70's, including the GD. I always liked it.

regarding the rigs,...
We would gather, and, gear was broken out. I was covering a mic stand for all of these shows, that had a pair of Schoeps cardioids (pronounced Shepps), and, a pair of Neumann KM84 cards, as well as my head mounted omni pair, in quasi-binaural configuration. if you listen to any of them, you can tell that the hall is quite nice sounding. The main problem in this first of the two runs of concerts in the Forum that year, is the intensity of the volume of the PA system; 160dB? easily. It was so loud, it felt like our clothes were being stripped from us by impacting sound waves.

OK,.. so I eluded to having a really tight wall of blockers for the Carson '90 shows, and, escorting people around the mic stand.
This whole two concert runs, six shows, of of 02_&_12 1989 Forum were the same thing, an extremely tight inner circle of sympathetic friends and blockers. Without them it was like facing a hard incoming and outgoing tide of people, and at times, like a flash flood of humanity; before show hall filling, end of set one, and, the start of drums, people heading for beers and outhouses. It was a hard flow of people.

If you listen closely to the intimate Jerry bits, like Jack Straw, Stella Blue, linked directly above on 12-10 Forum, you can hear just how distant the audience sounds. That is because we had a circle of sympathetics, and blockers, of likely 25' in diameter, with the mic stand in the center, and, my own head-worn quasi-binaural rig at the center of it. To say that we had 50 quiet people around us, might be a bit shy. It was a really nice place to be as a mic stand (me covering the mics like a vulture).

So, where you see HRTF stereo technique listed, clamp on some headphones for a wild ride. But, this technique, HRTF, was developed to be friendly to speakers, not just headphones; it shares both output speaker formats just fine.
HRTF stereo, or Head reference Transfer Function stereo is a quasi-binaural technique that another friend and I were developing in the mid-80's with our matching Sennheiser MKE2002 binaural head stereo kits. He was doing shows this way up n the SF Bay area, and I was covering a ton of stuff in soCal. We'd trade tapes, and compare notes, and, inch our way forward in learning/developing a new variation on an old technique.

And, this is me, as an HRTF baffled omni stereo head; rear row, center, with the mics in my hair, as HRTF. This was during the same time as the Forum run of Dead shows. And posed with a local world-reggae-dead jam band.

OK, the long hair w/ glasses directly in front of me, on center, is 'my world music recording partner".
We recorded a ton of stuff together. But, that's pretty much where our relationship was,.. in that genre.

Then, we come back to the Grateful Dead, and, many, many other bands, other genre, and I have been the luckiest guy in the world to have crossed paths with this cat, Tom.
Tom, insane, over the top, audiophile.

In 1989, Bruel and Kjaer released an amazing new microphone, the B&K 4011 cardioid (end-addressed small diaphragm condensor). A friend of ours from NYC, who was a studio engineer, pro audio sales, and GD taper, brought out a pair of these new mics for us to audition.
OH FΩCK! Why god, why,?!?!?!?
Our world changed, incredibly, deeply, and, home equity tappingly expensive. A pair of 4011's, a cool $5k in 1989 dollars.
At this time, we had as options, small diaphragm condensors by Neumann (expensive, but, affordable), Schoeps (looks at tapping home equity level), and AKG component capsule systems (affordable, and quite good).

About this same time, Sony had just released the TCD-D10 portable DAT recorder. But, it was only available in Japan, and, the tapes were only available there as well.
No problem, a trust-funder friend of ours went to Japan, and bought a bunch of the machines, and tapes, and brought them back, and made sure that the crew was set with early DAT machines, if you could afford that route.
But these new DAT machines, were so small, and compact, compared to having to haul in two small suitcase size components, the Sony PCM Beta HiFi digital recording rig, and, its needed motorcycle battery, x2, to run the deck remotely.
The DAT decks made a huge difference;... problem, the manuals were in Japanese, with no translations. But, they were fairly simple machines to figure out.


My partner, Tom, he went all in, and, bought into the 4011 pair, the grey market DAT machine, and blanks,.. along wit a few peripherals, like a Neumann portbale 2channel power pack, cables, etc.

All of this, leading up to this effort by Tom, below, when he went to NYC, for this epic run at Madison Square Garden, in 1990. What he captured here is utterly stunning. It is one of the finest GD ambient stereo recordings that I've ever heard; just phenomenal.

*I did a huge pile of transfers from DAT 1648 to CD-R masters, when the advent of the self recordable CD-R first came into play. At this same time, around 2001, I also had foot reconstructive surgery, and, was in no weight bearing mode, on crutches, for a year. In that time, I fed lots of DAT machine -> CD-R mastering transfers, via a Tascam DA20mkII DAT -> Tas CDR700pro master cd-r burner. At that time, it was wild west, and I was trying to figure out the best way to split the files to limited capacity discs. This was one of those, and, is not the way to do it.
So, it needs to be reloaded and split again, to fix this faux pas.

So, here is a different tactic to get to where you want to be at a concert,...
Arrive early, and go to the seats that you want, not the ones that you have; and with barter in hand, such as,.... well, yeah,... and with good tickets to trade for, and, the promise for tapes.
The GD offered rear of, and far side of the hall as the official taping section, which is like way far out in left field. The OTS was in all likeliness, 75 rows back, and, far far right of the audience.
So, we gathered our resources, and, waited for the people with the seats to arrive. They did, and, they were friendly with the traded seats. So, we set up camp.
Camp, in this case, was at dead-center, in the second section of seating up from the orchestra area. This was directly above the technical/lighting booth area, by about 10' high above that area. We had a wide open unobstructed view of, and in a well balanced spot, in relation to the triangulation of the PA system, and how that related to a quality ambient recording.
We took a heavy duty stage-lighting clamp, and clamped it to the safety handrail that fronted this section of seating, to keep people from falling the 10' to the floor in front of them. This type of clamp is meant specifically for clamping to round stage pipe. From there, we ran into a patch bay, and sent signal to a dozen decks? They were all the same type of deck, and, were very synchable, with real analog VU meters, and a peak light. The best part, you could shut the deck off for a tape flip, by holding down the record button, while pushing the off button. If you did it in this fashion, the signal stayed viable, and no loss of signal occurred during the tape flip, which was a very high energy moment.

We pulled this seat shift caper two days of this run.
I went HRTF stealth unit up front on one of them, but had no blockers or helpers. So, there is a bit more audience noise on that day.
