Almost forgot!

Neil Peart, the nonpareil drummer of the legendary rock band Rush, turned the big 6 0 today.

Currently Rush is on tour but off tonight so I'm sure Neil is having fun wherever he is. :beer:

Happy birthday to one of the best drummers the world has ever known (I was just kidding about the "best" thing, there is no "best" of anything :thmbsp:) and, imo, also a great lyricist (for the most part at least) and further, a seemingly all round great guy.

I'm going to have a Molson and Labatt and play some Rush! :beer: :music:

Happy birthday Neil, who is (perhaps the) most skilled living (rock genre) drummer in the world.

I was glad to see that you've retracted the "best drummer in the world" comment:thmbsp:

So many people become so myopic when it comes to their favorite musician, band, athlete, etc, that they can't appreciate any other. And it's a big, diverse world out there....

There's all kinds of great drummers: Jazz drummers, Cuban drummers, Indian Tabla drummers, and of course, the grand-daddys of them all, African drummers. And god knows how many other types and styles...

I would find it pretty much impossible to decide on a "best" drummer, or a "best" musician of any type.

Which is not to say that Mr. Peart is chopped liver, by any means!

Who would you pick....

Omar Hakim?
Mongo Santamaria?
Tito Puente?
Michael Olatunji?
Buddy Rich?
Bun E. Carlos?

I dig them all.

Definitely and well said! :thmbsp: The post title was of course tongue in cheek. :D There is no "the best" anything in the subjective world of musical taste, just what a person may personally like best. :yes:

I'm just glad ol' Neil and Rush are still around, it didn't look like either would be in the late 90's. :no:
 
If he is not the greatest he is obviously right near the top. HB Neil!

He is definitley

up in that lofty perch of best rock drummers of his day. He can make those skins sing and what i like about him is one of the same reasons i like Mickey Hart is he pushes the envelope,he continues to find new sounds,new toys to make his contribution to the band and to music in general. He is a guy who loves to play drums,it's not just a paycheck for him.
Here's one though,I heard him on a talk show and he said his last name is pronounced PEAR with a T.
Now I'm gonna play Test for Echo.
 
dallas taylor, ginger baker, bonzo and art blakey...peart is good..i put him in the same class as moon..when they play, you always know it's them..which is good and bad..letting the music flow with dynamics is much better...of course IMHO
 
I know we all have our favorites. So Happy Birthday to one of my favorite drummers, Neal. In drum solo in the album All the Worlds A Stage I can swear I hear the wind whistling through his sticks.
 
Ah, yes Happy Birthday Mr Peart! Despite what any of us may think about his approach or technical skills, etc. we must admit the he is absolutely amongst the top of the top in drumming gods:

John Bonham (almost a tie with Neil Peart)
Johnny Densmore
Buddy Rich
Ashwin Sood
Oh, yes Mr Neil Peart is a fabulous lyric writer as well. I understand he is no slouch at book writing either. (I haven't read any of his books yet).

Agreed. It takes a lot of humility to admit you could improve and constantly seek to and even relearn your craft from teachers as he did in the mid 90's and mid 2000's.

While I like much of his lyrical content, and even find some almost on tier with the best poetry/literature in terms of his perspicacity and insights into the human condition, I must say I don't care for his writing much. I read two of his books and that was enough for me (I sometimes read his essays on his site though). They were mildly interesting, but meandering, disjointed imo. However I'm not much for traveling literature or autobiographical material in general (I found Darwin's "Voyage of the Beagle" and Sartre's "The Words" merely so-so for instance).

First saw them in '94 and at least once every tour/tour leg since! Back in high school people who didn't even like Rush went to just see Neil I remember. There's very few drummers who can achieve that type of status: most drum solo's, for instance, are used for bathroom breaks at concerts, Neil's are always a highlight of the show!
 
I was at the concert here in Tucson when Geddy got hit on the head with a bottle . I had 3rd row center seats . Before they started the show Neil was warming up on the kit behind the curtain . They had the pre show music going on but you could still hear the drums . But what has stayed with me all these years was that I felt the kic drums ! The mics weren't on yet but still you felt them hit you in the chest . It was a hell of a show !! Truly a great drummer . Happy Birthday to Neil . And to celebrate I'm going to put on.........Steve Gadd .
