The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Rome

Holsum Honey Buns
For the past three weeks now I have been mesmerized by this game. I've had it for a long time, but never took the time to give it try until now.

It is by far the most cerebral & mechanical game I have ever attempted to complete. This game will drive you bonkers! :D

Well, I am asking if anyone has any tips on how to beat the room before you face the Helmasaur King?

I've tried all I know how to use the Hammer to beat these things, but always lose all lives. A couple of times I did make to the boss, but only had one life & that didn't end well. :tears:

Also, its a pain to have to start from the entrance of the palace when the game is over instead of the bosses room. This game is something else.

Well, I hope someone can help. I may have to find someone to mail my game to for help! :D

I was a huge Zelda fan back in the late 80s or early 90s. Haven't owned a Nintendo for 20 years now, so can't help.

Hi JC!

Yea, I know I can beat him with the bombs & the sword after I break the mask. It's that doggone room before where you have to hammer those turtles or whatever they are in the dark.

I never have enough lives to finish all of them off.

Maybe I'll look into buying a game genie if I can't find a way to do it! :D
The game genie may not even work with the SNES system.

Also, I found out that SNES carts have batteries for saves that lose power. Geesh!
If you replace them, you'll lose all saved info.

Thanks BmW!
Yea, have a few old systems & just started playing my mini SNES console once again. Usually I play Super Smash TV (Extra Hard Game), Street Fighter II Turbo Hyper Fighting, or PacAttack, but I found the Zelda cart & have been hooked ever since! :D

I've got about 30 SNES games in all.

Man, I know what you're talking about. It's been a couple years since i've played the game, but boy, do I remember that room!:D I played the GBA version first, but got a SNES cart a couple months back, haven't had a chance to play it on the system yet though. Favorite Zelda personally is "Links Awakening" for the original Gameboy, a really great game considering it's protable nature and the system it was intended for! (I need to plug it into a Superboy and play it on the big screen someday:yes:)

Those turtle things are tough, as far as I can remember, I got through by "making waves". Smash the hammer on a couple and backpedal till their friends catch up, turn around and bop them, if you line it up right you can hit a couple while the others are messed up. But again, it's been a while.

Also, you know those floating red whisp things that bounce around the rooms? get out your magic powder and time it just right to sprinkle it on them, they turn into fairys, which are incredibly useful at that point of the dungeon.

Always had trouble with the Helmasur king, but I suppose it's not as bad as the Moldorm (the worm that knocks you off the stage).

Hi 33!

Yeppur!
I've tried running around the room & using the hammer with them in the wave (group), but I usually get finished or if I make it to the HK, the waves again get me or I only have one life to fight that boss.

It's a head banger for sure! :D

I haven't got far enough I guess to see the floating things. I may just have to buy a Game Genie to finish the boss, save & then continue until I run into trouble at other stages. Yea, that's cheating, but I'm an old man now :D & I want to finish the game before the battery dies & I lose all of that work.

Yea, Moldorm was a real kick in the pants, but after about 20 tries & being knocked off all the time, I finally beat him. That was an encourager for this ole coot! :D

Well, take care & I hope you get back into the game mode.

If im not mistaken all ya have to do is hammer the ground and they flip on their back... then hit em again and they're dead .... no? Memory fuzzzzy sorry.

Hm, I could swear they were in that dungeon, apparently they;re actually called Anti-fairies (hance why magic powder turns them back) here's an image:

Batteries drying up is a real bummer about old cartridges, though it's amazing how well most of them have held up considering the age. I bought a copy of Chrono Trigger used that still had all three saves up and running:yes:

Well, take care & I hope you get back into the game mode.

Haha, i've just been playing more modern stuff recently, mostly Monster Hunter. Been itching to get back into some old SNES stuff though, since I have a good collection, but i've only beat a couple:sigh:

That's right, hammer to flip then a swipe with a sword. If it's the room i'm thinking of, though, they throw 4 in a very narrow space, or there's another room in the same dungeon that has about 8-10 running around...in groups they can get very tricky, since another hammer smash rights them, as I recall.

A Link to the Past is one of the definitive games for the SNES. Super Metroid was another good one that showed off the SNES power. How many games can you rattle off that used all 8 buttons (shoulder buttons were rarely ever used for any good purpose) like S. Metroid did. Mega Man X was another showcase of how much bigger, louder, and intense they were compared to the NES counters. That was one of the first games that utilized real Stereo sound. You could hear the sword beam (circling sparkle) move from left to right on the speakers.

Anyways, it's pretty tricky, but you do have to use the hammer to get those turtles on their back, and then charge up the sword to do a 360. It's more powerful. I beat the game back before 56k modems (read internet) were around. Not trying to brag, but we didn't have game FAQs or Youtube videos to instruct us how to beat hard games. We just practiced. Nearly all overhead Zelda's, you do this for the turtles.

Here's a link (no pun intended) to a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URMIyFf1r5g

That was my favorite Zelda, although The Minish Cap and the two Oracle/Ages for GBA and GBcolors were fun too. I was playing the Oracle/Ages back to back was not so fun, you get burnt out on playing it. I used my Gamecube with the GBA attachment to play those games. It's something else playing a GBcolor low rez on a 46" HDTV.

Actually my favorite Zelda game is Skyward Sword. I still haven't beaten it. Why? Because while Link to the Past you can beat in a few days, I've already spent 3 1/2 weeks trying to beat SkySword and I think I'm still 3/4ths done. It's the craziest longest Zelda game. Take how long Ocarina of Time was, and multiply that by 3. If you have the time and patience, Skyward Sword is hands down the best 3D Zelda and maybe alone worth having a Wii (besides Mario Galaxy's and Smash Brothers). Twilight Princess was good, but SS takes it up a few notches.

Ahhh slp!

Yea, my trouble comes in at the 7:20 mark of that video & he's good too. I've been following NintendoCapriSun on the tube & he's fantastic. But, he's also remarked that he's played this game for many years.

I just started about two weeks ago & have got this far. I pat myself on the back for that! :D

But, I never have that many hearts too when I get there. I only have about 5 or 6 hearts when I get to that room.

I found out I can't use a Game Genie as I have the Mini or newer SNES console that it will not work on! :tears:

Thanks for sharing,
Rome

Hi Heez!

Thanks so much for the info & yea seems like you are a gamer too! :D

Yea, I've been playing since the Intellivision II days when there was no youtube indeed!

This game has sparked an interest once again like no other & that guy in the link fell prey in that room even having so many lives. Now, when I die, I don't get any fairy hovering like that for recovery.

What do I need to do to get one to help me start at that point instead of going back the entrance?

Thanks,
Rome

Do you have bottles to hold fairies or health potions? I usually carry two fairies and two health potions so that way if I get low, I can replenish during a boss battle. If I "die" before I can use it, that's what the fairies are for. They automatically revive you, but with only 8 hearts (potions replenish all). You know you can catch fairies with the net?

It's been a long time since I've played that game, and yes, the newer SNES (later versions and top-loading) wouldn't allow Game Genies to work. Nintendo hated Galoob and reprogrammed the SNES to bypass any GG codes (I think it did some sort of built-in reset and load the game up). I admit I used to "cheat" with a GameSaver+ attachment.

You know how save states work on emulators? This thing did the same thing back then. You had to push the "L + select" to create a "save point" and push "R + select" to load that state. It even had a real-time "slow-mo" that kept the music intact (not like slowmo's that paused the game like bashing the start button repeatedly). You did "L + start" to activate it. I used it to beat games like R-Type and MegaMan X/2/3 since they were so relentless. Apparently you could even use the adapter to play SFamicom games since it didn't have a notched insert (it just gripped the game by the chipboard).

I also have SN Programmable SNES arcade stick.

This is the best arcade stick I have ever used. Besides having 3 buttons you could program for moves (like SFII or KoF's), you can rotate the 4-button layout in a diamond shape or square. This is a godsend since some games only need the A/B buttons (simple jump/attack) like Mario, and other games need 3 buttons to work well, like Super Metroid. The left shoulder button was above the joystick. You don't know HOW nice it is to use your left ring finger to do complicated actions. I would assign this button for the "dash move" in Megaman X or being able to "stand still" in Contra III and shoot incoming enemies. That's one less button/action you have to try and finagle with your right hand.

I have yet to see a new arcade stick that lets you have buttons on the left (I still use mine with PS2 or USB adapters to play current games). If you plan on playing more SNES games, I'd recommend getting some form of arcade stick since you'll have better agility even for games like Zelda and Mario. Having two fingers to work with is a lot easier than trying to juggle it with one thumb.

Hi Heez!

Yea, I have the net & have caught some fairies before, but I don't get to see anymore when I get to the palace to begin the trek to the boss. When my games loads up it says I have 10 hearts, but when I begin it shows only six.

Maybe the battery is not saving as it should, not sure.

That's some more great info & I have emulators for several games on my PC. I truly enjoy Super Smash TV on my puter.

In my SNES I have the codes for extra lives & games, also one that allows you to chose what boss you want to play. "Scarface" is truly a monsta'! :D

Wow!
That joystick is so nice. I have a very nice Asciiware turbo controller that I use the SNES games. It's a blast to use, especially on Street Fighter II Turbo.

Thanks again & I hope to find a way soon to beat that room & continue on to fight the HK.

You need bottles to put fairies/potions in. I think you can have at least two bottles by that time in the game. Also, the reason why it shows you 10 hearts is because that's how many hearts you've gained (max total). You always start out with six (I thought it started you out with 3, actually). Just go around outside and regain those missing hearts and try it again. Try to get two fairies in bottles, since you only have 10 hearts, the fairies replenish 8 on revival.

Yea, I just transported to the light world to buy a bottle, but the guy said he was out. Also, I went to a house in that area that is supposed to have one, but no go. The vessel didn't have any, so I transported back to the dark world.

Geesh!

Also, I can run into a tree when I start out & a fairy pops up, but I don't have a bottle.

Ps: I deleted the word (when) in the earlier post. I need my meds! :D
Rome

You already bought the first bottle. There's another bottle in the bar. Just walk into the back of the building and open the chest there. There's the 3rd bottle under the bridge near the castle (you have to dive). I don't remember where the fourth one is. It's in the dark world, but requires a lot of steps to pull off.

Hi heez!

Thanks so much for the info & stickin' with me on this! :D

Yea, I just got back from spending some time with my GF & you know I had to fire Zelda up! :D

I did find the third bottle & captured a fairy by running into the tree in front of the castle before the trek to the palace of the HK. I'll try my hand at it maybe tomorrow.

Kinda feel betta now that I have a bottle to capture them. I guess I can only fit one fairy at a time in the bottle. The other two have magic potion in them. I wish I could empty one if I need to.

Well, take care,
Rome
