The metamorphosis

The metamorphosis begins

Ok I have started my journey down the long and winding road to speakerdom. Here is a picture of the original cabinet in pretty rough shape.

The entire front was originally grill cloth. I will veneer the entire thing. Also, it had a mid and tweet that fired up out of the top. It was an elaborate design with the top routered on both sides. The top for recessed grill cloth and the bottom to fit a mouting board for the drivers. I will make an entire new top for my purposes.

Something I've never seen before, and I'm not sure what they are for, are clay tiles mounted inside the cabinet.

Wards...those cabinets, drivers and horns look great! Congrats!!!

What sort of veneer are you going to use? an mdf, plywood or the glue on veneer?

I've seen some people who used the "real wood veneer" type incorporate a cool trick with this. It's a neat (and clean looking) way to mount your speaker grill to your cabinet...instead of using the ball and socket type grill guides.

Before you apply your veneer...drill out some shallow holes in the corners of your front (speaker) panel. Drill these where ever you think would be best to hold your grill on...most likely the where the four corners of your speaker grill will meet your speaker. Now glue circular magnets in these shallow holes you just drilled out...after this...apply your veneer. When you make your new speaker grill you do (basically) the same thing...add the magnets in the correct positions to line up with the magnets added on your speakers.

I haven't tried it (yet)...but I have seen speakers with this used...it really looks (and works) great.

The true void-free ply is nice wards...looks like your gonna have yourself another nice set of speakers!

can't wait to see more on your progress and to hear your impressions...keep us updated!!!

oh...could ya please wait to finish yours until I'm done? this is getting embarrassing

Thanks for the tip on the magnets. I would have never thought of it, but it sure sounds like a cool way to hold a grill on "magically".

"Make is so number one"

here is the latest

new MDF top, back and inserts cut. the face and top will be veneer and the back will be dark brown or black. still have to do the cutout for the horn.

sealed then painted. they will get another coat of sealer when the veneer is done.

back sanded, sealed, painted and mounted with polished brass screws. Still needs a final coat of "DEFT" that will give it a nice satin finish.

Well I finally got some more time to mess with these. so, today cutout for one of the horns. this was done free hand on my router table.

tested fitted before I glue it all into place. As you can see the lip of the horn sticks up, so I will raise the top with some 3/4" mdf. Once veneered you will never know.

Well if you hadn't broadcast it all over the internet! ;)

Made the grill frames today. They are cut at a 45 degree angle, will be covered in brown cloth like my Altecs and held on by magnets.
