The Mid-Century/Danish thread

Picked up this Dorothy Thorpe candlestick holder at a fundraiser Friday night. I cannot believe how well it cleaned up for considering it's probably nearly 50 yrs old.

A couple years ago I saw a similar but different holder but at the time I hadn't been exposed her designs and/or their collectible value.

Great find! I've come across tons of Thorpe glassware, but never a candlestick!

This may be the first post of many...I am kind of addicted to Mid Century Design.

This particular chair is a Krueger. I rescued it from an abandoned building parking lot. It sat for 10+ years in the elements. Some wet-sanding, penetrol, and a new base later....HERE WE ARE!

You are one lucky SOB! I'd sell a kidney for one of those chairs.

Here's one cabinet from my new project.

Thinking about finding some aluminum legs instead of the tapered...

been a long winter finally today an Estate Sale in Wisconsin...they did not post it on Craigslist, just put a sign out in front of the house...said it started at 10am...I walked up to the door to be first in line at 9:45 and they said come on in, great first one in the door that never happens. I looked around and almost missed the clock $5 Westclox nocord clock, and in the back bedroom $5 for this little Sea Serpent Lamp.
Said the garage and basement will not be ready until Friday....I will be first in line again.

I finally get to actually post something in this topic instead of just complimenting everyone elses excellent rooms!

Just picked up a couple sofas from goodwill, only got pictures of the one, though:

As that sticker says, made and finished in Denmark, imported by selig. They aren't in the best condition, there's some watermarks and the varnish is grinded off a couple corners, but I haven't cleaned them up yet, so the biggest problem is dust.

First thing leaving is those ugly ass cushions, I may go with a three-piece cushion of slightly off-white, maybe a cream color...something that doesn't make it look like a piece of church furniture.

They were $30.50 each, pretty good, even considering their relatively minor cosmetic issues:thmbsp:

EDIT: if anyone knows anything about Selig, or these pieces, i'd love to find more info, all i've gotten is the designer is (probably) Ib Kofod-Larsen:scratch2:

Great find there, 33 1/3.

Out here, stuff like that is getting scarcer and scarcer at the thrift stores, at least at a price that might be considered a bargain. They often put the more desirable stuff online, or they put it on the floor but price it such that it makes one wonder if "thrift store" might be considered false advertising.

Still, some cool swag still finds its way to deserving souls such as ourselves at prices we mere mortals can afford.

Oh, here's something that looks similar, currently on eBay, with a $2,400 BIN. (Doubt they'll get anything approaching that much for it, but still, it does make your 30 buck couches look all the better, raggedy upholstery and all, eh?)

Yep, that was a big part in getting it, simply put, i've never seen a piece of furniture like this before, and I really have doubts I ever would again. Getting an piece of actual mid-century danish-sorta-thing for a reasonable price was truly a good start to the morning, since I love everything about that style of design, except the massive prices it commands:D

yeah, not even close to that. I've seen several pieces online that are in better shape to near mint selling for about $800-$1200, but i'm totally alright with a beater set for under a tenth of that. I shouldn't really care about value, since I plan on keeping them for a long time.

Going to clean and oil it and see what lies beneath...the set could use a refinish in some spots, but i'm not keen on that sort of work, so i'll live with it as-is probably:yes:

I'd have bought those in a heartbeat, even though I don't really have a place for them. (I like the style quite a bit, but they wouldn't be preferable to anything I already have here at present. Maybe if they were maybe a foot or so shorter ... ) But they'd make great barter bait.

My wife and I bought that sofa (not your sofa, but one with identical frame and different cushions) second hand back in the mid 80s and lived with it in 50s ranch home for several years until we had kids and moved further out into the newer 'burbs in the '90s. We had lots of similar period stuff, including a beat up Plycraft Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. Used MCM and Danish Modern was cheap then. All sold at garage sales when we moved. I miss some of it.

I actually like the red cushions on that couch.

Selig has been around forever as a manufacturer (and apparently importer) of furniture. They made a lot of Eames lounge chair knockoffs that are incorrectly identified as Plycrafts. Seligs have flat, oblong arms on metal supports. Plycrafts generally have bent wood arms much like the original Eames parts.

No pictures yet, but my new office now has a very nice six-drawer Lane Acclaim desk. :)

My secret? I actually don't have a place for them:D. I lucked out, my sister is getting a small apartment while she's at college, so I can "store" them there for a year or so. Trying to clear a spot in my room, since it'd fit in really well, I think.

Hm, i'd love to keep the cushions just because it's cheaper and easier...but in person, I just don't think they really fit...it's a personal taste thing, I think it looks like a giant strawberry:scratch2:

Probably going to go with a slightly dark-tinted tan fabric, though i've had a couple other colors going through my head. Going to split the rear cushion into three seperate sections to help break it up a bit. I'll post pics when it eventually gets done and placed.

Ah, that's where I have heard of Selig before, i've seen a couple post of the Eames chair copies. Man, i'd love one of those Eames chairs, even a copy.

Got a little GE clock I need to get a picture of, cute little mid-century-esque thing.

EDIT: by the way, those sofas were property of the University of Kentucky, which is bizarre...both my parents went there in the 80's, and never saw anything like that. I get the impression these things have sat in a basment for a good couple decades. Was probably in a staff lounge or office, since students would have trashed them in no short order.

Hey, that's what I got today and was about to post!

Not bad for $1.

Man, that thing has some pretty good features for its size:yes: digging that blue color.

Here's this little clock, just a simple 60hz motor driven kitchen clock, maybe a bedside clock, since it does have an alarm, though I haven't tested it yet.

geclock.jpg

It's not really accurate, since it seems to have lost about 30 seconds over a couple weeks, but accuracy is why I have a digital clock anyway. Not bad for $1.50;)
