The Mid-Century/Danish thread

Missed that when I checked this thread a few days ago. Those are nice, really like the painting. It's great that you are able to enjoy some of the things your dad did in his younger days.
Thanks Buck. I give them all a look, and my dad a thought, daily.

More photos of the downstairs system...

Golly, I really like this!

I like that couch. I wouldn't change it. I found a Selig chair last week but I didn't get it. It was really cool but more 70's looking. It had a chrome base that made it look like it was floating. The chair needed to be reupholstered and I wasn't up for the task.

Man, that's two that dig that red stuff, huh? Honestly, if it were a little more orange or a little more red, i'd like it quite a bit more, in the sun and outside it looks good, but in a room is another story (also, the texture on them is really weird and nasty). The resized pics also cover some of its faults. I may give the old covers a bath and keep them as backups, but who knows.

Got one of the new cushions finished last night, I may run it in a wash to tighten up the fabric a little bit (or add a little stuffing to some spots), but otherwise it went together nicely. Oddly enough, the photos make it look nearly gray, but the main fabric is actually a Khaki-ish tan colored denim-like material:

And just the new one:

Going together pretty well, though it's a heck of a process. Saving a ton of money doing it at home, but it takes a lot of time:yes:

Found an Arne Jacobsen/Fritz Hansen series 7 chair at Goodwill. I haven't found any furniture pieces in a while and have seen so many copies of this chair I was pretty excited when I came across an original. I had to straighten one of the legs and applied some Howards but it is in nice condition.

I really like this frame. I have been keeping a keen eye out for something like this to replace my current sofa but no luck so far. I think the local antiques/collectible dealers scoop up most that come on the market.

Killer.

From Goodwill, eh? Quite the score.

Mind saying what you paid?

How are you doing the upholstery at home? Does it require a special sewing machine?

I found this sofa last week. I think it's an Adrian Pearsall that has been reupholstered. And in my opinion not the best choice of fabric.

That is a beautiful chair. Good karma that it was found by someone that knows of its beauty and history.

Cheers, Snade

No foolin'. It just as likely might have gone to a guy who expected to use it as a step stool, and patio chair, every now and then.

Thanks everyone! It may sound corny but when I find a piece like this I feel like fate has brought us together:tongue:

I was unaware this thread existed and am glad I have people to share my furniture obsession with. I've got a number of Heywood Wakefield pieces I'll post pictures of when I get a chance.

I really like that, the fabric is awful of course. With a good fabric it could be amazing.

I've never undertaken a reupholstering project, it seems very daunting:scratch2:

Yeah, that obvious reupholster is kinda hideous. IMO some of the originalal Pearsall's were kinda hideous though. These solid pattern jobs that sold through 1stdibs look much better:

That second one does it for me. I showed it to my wife and her response was "that is what we need":D

Hm, that's a classy little chair, finding an original of something like that is really cool.

Urgh, that's a beautiful frame and a great design...but that fabric is rough. Honestly it's not the worst that could be on there, but you have to wonder why people put that sort of thing on the couch to begin with:scratch2:

Yep, doing it at home...doesn't really require a fancy sewing machine, though I think professional upholestry requires a better machine. I'm just using a "period correct" Singer 500a. The biggest problem is the density of the fabric, and i'm using a slightly thinner denim material, rather than actual upholstery stuff (the added benefit of it being way less expensive). Different machines handle fabric thickness differently, and the seams get pretty thick at times.

This pair of sofas is also a pretty easy job anyway because it's just two pillows that sit on the frame, rather than actually attached to the couch.

A bit earlier Singer will handle just about anything if you take it slow. I use a 15-91 for upholstery work.

Great lamp find

My wife and I stopped in a thrift store in Lynchburg VA on our way home from visiting family and found this lamp:

It didn't have any markings on it but it was cool, and the price was right at $8.

We couldn't find a lot of info on it, but it turns out it's a pretty rare Luxo floor lamp model. It looks really cool with our other MCM stuff. We've been looking for a lamp that has the long arching arm, but this is in many ways even cooler.

found this at my Goodwill today...I walked by it and stopped and went back. Nice lines, great construction, 2 huge dovetailed drawers. Turned it over and there it was Drexel Parallel 2/61. Walnut table needs restoration but solid as a rock, Need to do some sanding, staning and replace the missing glass. Love the price $4.99.

The stains came off with a little eblow grease and a magic eraser....looks like just a new piece of glass and it should be great.
