The Mid-Century/Danish thread

found this at my Goodwill today...I walked by it and stopped and went back. Nice lines, great construction, 2 huge dovetailed drawers. Turned it over and there it was Drexel Parallel 2/61. Walnut table needs restoration but solid as a rock, Need to do some sanding, staning and replace the missing glass. Love the price $4.99.

The stains came off with a little eblow grease and a magic eraser....looks like just a new piece of glass and it should be great.

I really like that table. Nice find.

My wife and I stopped in a thrift store in Lynchburg VA on our way home from visiting family and found this lamp:

It didn't have any markings on it but it was cool, and the price was right at $8.

We couldn't find a lot of info on it, but it turns out it's a pretty rare Luxo floor lamp model. It looks really cool with our other MCM stuff. We've been looking for a lamp that has the long arching arm, but this is in many ways even cooler.

I also found one at the Goodwill about three months ago. Looks like a Luxo, but I don't think it is a Luxo. The only other one I have seen sold in a nice shop in Chicago for 400 bucks. I have one in my shop for $325. Cool lamps.

My fascination with all things MCM started fairly recently. I wall mounted my flat panel TV back in early November 2012. I'd been searching for months for some type of media console/credenza to place below the TV. I checked all the standard stores (Ikea, Crate & Barrel, Room and Board, etc.), but didn't really see anything that moved me. I wanted something more distinctive than the standard look alike offerings currently available.

One day while browsing the magazine section of my local grocery store, I picked up a copy of Atomic Ranch magazine. One of the ads n the back had a photo of a Broyhill Brasilia credenza and the memories came flooding back. My sister is 21 years older than me and when I was a kid she had a complete Broyhill Brasilia dining room set and also a walnut Lane MCM bedroom set. I knew then what direction I wanted to pursue. I was specifically interested in American made walnut furniture from the late 1950s - late 1960s.

It started with a Christmas gift from my girlfriend - a 1965 Zenith MN2670 stereo console. She purchased it from the original owner who had bought it for his wife for Christmas in 1965.

I also added a Robert Shaw Lux starburst clock from 1963.

Since then, I've added a pair of period correct speaker cabinets (and am transplanting the drivers, with rebuilt crossovers from my Infinitiy Qb speakers into these cabinets), a beehive lamp and a 1961 Leroy Neiman hand signed serigraph of the Stags Head pub in Dublin Ireland.

I also have a pair of these Lane walnut record cabinets to house my LP collection:

That's my upstairs system. I recently added this downstairs:

to be continued...
On of thos Zenith consoles came into a local thrift store today, 40 bucks. Good deal but there is a big hack right on the front lip of the lid that opens for the turntable. Too bad or I would get it.

I finally get to actually post something in this topic instead of just complimenting everyone elses excellent rooms!

Just picked up a couple sofas from goodwill, only got pictures of the one, though:

First thing leaving is those ugly ass cushions,

The color is perfect for that sofa.

Here is a a couple shots of a pearsall sofa I found at a tag sale about a month ago. It's BIG, about 9 feet long. The built in "end tables" have reversible formica panels with one side imitating white marble and the other wood. Seat cushion recovered, the 2 back cushions have slipcovers over the original fabric. The bad news is that I have no room for it at my house and my girlfriend HaTeS it! It's being stored in a friends shed but she needs the room so it will have to be sold. My friend said she will put it on ebay for me, we'll see what happens..... as long as the buyer PICKS IT UP. I do not have a box big enough ~ lol.

How much you want? That is a nice sofa.

Couldn't resist buying this bed headboard today even though the sides and footboard were missing. :tears:

Lots of code numbers on the back but no maker's name. It's 6 1/2 feet wide....

Looks like a cross between a Kent Coffey and a Brasilia. Nice, but odd.

Anyone ever heard of the German Furniture company Ilse? I only found one website connected to them. http://www.vierhaus.de/content/index.php?gp=yes&submitShow=1&selCat=21&selTil=6
I found a nice table but it has a mechanism under it to raise or lower it and it doesn't seem to be working properly. I'd like to find out how easy and costly it would be to repair.

I don't really know the company but believe they made a couple different adjustable height tables. Do you have a picture of the table and/or the mechanism? If you do my suggestion is to start a new thread in General Off Topic asking about it.

Lastly, there are several AK members in Germany, user HarmanKardon comes to mind, they might be able to assist you in some way.

This print was probably framed and sold at a department store in the 60's. Not really Tiki art, but uses the common exotic and colorful themes popular in the 60's. These kind of prints were sometimes reproduced in the thousands and sold in the big stores of that time.

I picked it up for a few dollars today at a thrift store. I may display it with some mid century modern furniture.

I think for what it is, it is beautiful.

Cheers,

Snade

Here's the matching cabinet and one of the "bowling pin" lamps:

And a close up of the cabinet:

And finally, to get back to where this all started, a Broyhill Brasilia II table ($19.99 at Goodwill, the top needs refinished) and one Brasilia dining chair ($7.99 at a different Goodwill).

I'm still pulling everything together, and need more accessories and an MCM sofa or sectional and a couple lounge chairs. I'm partial to the Adrian Pearsall style sofas, but haven't been able to find one at a reasonable price. But, considering this all started with a Christmas gift, I think I'm making good progress.

The chairs from my MCM dining set look exactly the same, but are marked Lenoir Chair Company. There is a picture some pages back.

Picked up this killer fiberglass shade desk lamp, sadly it's not in the best condition (discoloration on the shade from what looks like too hot of a lightbulb, but it's only on the outside, not the inside) but it was cheap and I loved the form. Anyone recognise who this may be by?
(excuse the mess in the first photo, under the desk is being used for storage as I'm moving in under a month)

In the last couple of weeks I've bought: A pretty cool Thomasville "Moorish" style end table (with hinged doors) for $15; a General Time Corp. clock for $1; and an unmarked record cabinet for $4 that is shown below before and after sanding. I'm still deciding on how to finish it. Right now I'm leaning towards a "Natural" Watco Danish oil plus paste wax.

I'd consider Deft brand satin finish aerosol lacquer.

Nice scores, by the way.

Thanks for the input. I have never refinished a piece of furniture before, so am a little overwhelmed by the options. I spent a lot of time sanding off the old finish so I don't want to screw up the new one!

Seeing these great wall clocks has reminded me that I really need to keep an eye out for one:scratch2:

I think it's hard to go wrong with Danish Oil. I've done a teak dining room table, a walnut dresser and a walnut plinth for my AR turntable in the Danish Oil and all have come out looking great. The plinth is the first time I've used a paste wax over the Danish Oil and I'm really happy with the results. I have one more coat of wax to go and it'll be ready.
I think you can't go wrong with that combo.

My wife spotted this set at the local thrift about a mile from home today Original JL Moller Model 71 chairs and an expandable table. I have nowhere for it but would have regretted it for years if I didn't get it.

I bought this record cabinet two weeks ago for $4. (Although I think I've spent almost $50 in materials since then to restore it!) After I finally finished sanding off the old finish, I applied 3 coats of Watco Danish oil ("Natural") and then, a couple days later, a coat of Howard's Feed 'N Wax. Not 100% done but close. I brought one of the doors to a local store that sells hardwood and he told me that the wood is mahogany.
